oil filter

the OEM filter causes the pressure to read higher sooner because there is air in there that has to bleed out first before it can start sending oil. the canton eliminates the air, and starts sending oil immediately. it takes a little less than a second to build pressure, but it is true oil pressure you are reading, and not air pressure.

here is a diagram (ignore the turbo part etc, but it's the same path) to illustrate the oil path, and why what you see first on the OEM filter is air pressure. because the OEM filter holds a "barrier" of oil, the pressure reading is misleading. the canton does not do that, so you get a real reading.

Okay I'm gonna bite, if not Mobil 1 then what Flash? And very importantly, will it still be okay with my Kellogg's?

i am very happy with amsoil. i was running redline, and it was just fine, right up until i wanted to track the car. the upper temp limit was better on the amsoil, so i changed.

the "new" mobil 1 formula supposedly put back in some of the ZDDP that they took out, so it may be just fine too.

Forget cereal, pour the used oil ( either Amsoil or Mobil1 ) on Haggis , it can only improve the taste <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

To echo Flash's recommendation I converted to a Canton racing filter 3 years ago. Absolutely love the convenience and certainly don't miss having to try to wipe oil out of all the nooks and crannies after removing the stock filter. As far as oil goes I use Rotella based on an analysis ordered by Cloud 968 (Andy).

I found this year-old thread while looking for latest on acceptable engine oil for 968. Found on the Mobil web site that Mobil 1 0-40 has 1000 ppm ZDDP while Mobil 1 Racing 0-50  has has 1850 ppm the 4-T motorcycle oil has 1300 ppm. Both are available locally for me.  I use the 0-50 Racing oil in my 1988 3.2 911 with aftermarket headers and no cats. There seems to be a variety of opinion in this forum on Mobil 1, but the bottom line beyond good lubrication would seem to be the ZDDP level. Is 1000 ppm OK for the 968, or should I go with the Racing oil (which may degrade the cat)? Any other down side to Mobil 1 Racing oil for a street/DE car?

Also, the main topic here is the filter change. I was told by a friend who was once a contributing technical author for Excellence magazine that a small hole punched in the top of the filter followed by a shot of low pressure air (~20 psi for 30 seconds or so, making sure the oil filler cap was off) would force the oil down and out of the filter, minimizing or eliminating leakage around the filter as it's removed. This has worked very well for me over the past several oil changes. Any down side to this?

FWIW, I use 10W40 as recommended by Porsche for the climate over here and add a bit of ZDDP to make up for the lesser level of the stuff in modern engine oils.

Quote:Just went to install my Canton oil filter. An earlier poster suggested the 25-254 filter. This is incorrect for my 1992 with 20mm threads. The proper filter is 25-284

Does anyone out there know why some 968's would have 18mm and some would have 20mm threads?
old tread... but K&N report 20mm thread for all years that I have tried.

I believe their site was incorrect. I have the Canton filter and it works great, but I'm going back to a stock unit for originality if anyone wants to buy it, let me know.

If you have or have had more than one 968 there are differences in the cars. Small to be sure.
