oil leak
#1

Folks:

My 95 968 Cab is leaking oil. From previous discussions. I am aware of the leak issues with the oil pan gasket and the rear balance shaft seal. There seems to be oil over much of the my engine block above the oil pan gasket. I have verified it is not the valve cover gasket. The oil pressure sending unit is not leaking but there is a large (about 22mm) hex head bolt close to the sending unit that has oil on it. The oil level sensor in the oil pan is wet--is that a common oil leak area? The oil filter is not leaking and the oil cooler is not leaking.

So my questions is: Can anyone provide a checklist of all the potential areas of oil leakage on these 968s that I should try to verify before undertaking any repair? Maybe starting with the easiest to repair if that is possible.

Thanks in advance to all that respond.

Bob

Might be your "oil pressure relief valve".

It should be torqued to 45NM, if still leaking better remove the relief valve and replace seals.

I personally should also take away the Thermostat Housing and check and clean inside, replace gaskets and seals.

Be aware that both oil and cooling water are running through that device.

That is a pain in the a.. to remove and replace the gaskets. I have done that in the past. better to do it while the engine is out of the car. You have to drain the coolingsystem as well.

I've done it last year, and didn't found it that dificult.

On the other hand i had the cross member out of the way for replacing the hydraulic mounts as well, giving more play from down below.

The pain in the ass at my side was the connecting piece (951 107 152 03) in between the engine block and the thermostat housing, i had to use some special home-made tools to get the last bits out.

As pliers didn't succeed to do the job.

Cutting some thread inside to get a bolt in in order to pull it out of the block.

PITA didn't quite cover that little connecting piece when I did mine - took me 5 days to get it out! The inner O-ring was stuck fast to the pipe and the hole in the block. In the end I bought (and modified due to the limited space) a blind hole bearing remover to pull it out.

I used a bolt up wall plug, stuck it down the inside, put a socket over the bolt part, then wound the nut on and pulled it out, it was very stuck

Mine was leaking oil out of the front edge just by the water pump

I have also tried various things but didn't work.

So i made some thread inside the aluminium tube to make a bolt fit in it.

That worked, but wasn't at all easy to do.

Also tried Waylanders plug, without succes
