+1. Very cool!. I saw last weekend the pictures from the new 911 GTR3. Will those headlights not fit into the guards without modifying them?

I know this is getting a little ahead of things, but once you get the design worked out, how do you envision it being applied to our cars? Would we have to mail our headlights to you for modification (doubtful, as you would probably get buried in headlights!)? Is this something that, with instructions, the average owner could do themselves? Or is it just too early to tell how it will likely go? Thanks.

Hard to say... likely the best bet would be to try to get an extra set or two of headlight, so I could do like a replacement set up/core charge.



I send the new lights, you send me your old headlights, etc.



We'll see how much work has to be done to what parts of the headlight though.

Does anybody (Flash...?) have an estimate as to the weight of the motor drive assembly for the pop-ups? 5-10 lbs, maybe?

about 8 lbs or so including armatures and such - the pan is good for another 3 or so



this conversion looks like it might save about 16-17lbs altogether, and off the front end of the car, where it matters most - the savings from the removal my the bumper (about 16 lbs)was definitely noticable - same with the battery

Thanks - that's actually a little more than I expected. Between this, replacement of the battery with an Odyssey dry cell (don't need much in the way of cold cranking amps here in Austin), and an RS Barn cat back exhaust, there's the opportunity to knock off about 75 lbs with no sacrifice. After that, I guess it starts getting a lot harder (and much more expensive...)

I have saved about 10 kg. with front lights. Original set up is about 15 kg.

certainly works for the race car, and the i have to commend the work - clearly a lot of thought went into this - i think something looks a bit "home made" though for a street car



perhaps if the pieces were reflectorized and/or a different color?



i think the problem for me is the entire idea of a lack of symmetry and balance within the stock opening - unless it is a single fixture, set into the opening in a symmetrical and balanced fashion, so that it looks like an orb within an orb (like an eyeball), with a convex lens, i think it is always going to look like it came from a kit car



not sure anybody is going to get there, and that's why i think that if i ever get around to it, i'll likely end up with 996 lights on new fenders - i love the look of the shot in flwbyu's avatar

I would have agreed with you, until I saw Saxman's photoshop rendition of his concept, which I think looks quite nice, and very professional, though it's a little hard to tell without seeing a direct-on image. I (any many others) are dying to see how the finished product will turn out...

yeah - me too - that has the potential to solve both the functional and the aesthetic issues i have with the concept



what i am really waiting for is to see how it is mounted, and how that will result in weight loss, which is really the only reason i would do it

Geez, you're a tough audience Flash. When I think of the factory fixed lights on the 944 turbo Cup cars I think Zoran's looks as good, just the roundness is different. I think the fully sealed 996 type thing could be great, but maybe not at the expense of having a jutting nose piece. Zoran's is the best I've seen so far. Plus any car with 537 hp at the wheels can have whatever lights he wants!! lol

lol - yes, i am a tough audience - way too many years of building cars, prepping concours cars, yada yada - details drive me nuts - i will frequently spend an hour on little things like matching fender gaps, carefully measuring, and won't settle until they are perfect - stuff that looks wrong makes me crazy - don't get me started on the "push-me-pull-you" twist wheels on the boxster



never noticed the turbo cup cars, but i'll look the next time i see a shot



i'm certainly not knocking his effort - i'm just looking for something that looks more factory than kit - as i said, perhaps different finish treatments might help - definitely a convex lens

Fair enough. I agree that when you see gaps or uneven bodywork it just kills the overall appearance for the car. As you say fine for racecars, but from the pic's I still kinda like Zoran's car.
