i've been thinking for a long time now about a 996 front end on my car - it got me to doing some searching and poking around to see what was already out there

Judging by the pic, it makes the front end look too long. I wonder how it would look on a cab? Perhaps a photoshop guy can do this.

yeah- the second pic really makes it look long - i think they used a wide angle lens

i like the silver one best,but i'd like to see it a bit smoother

the red one in the 3rd pic wouldn't be bad if they lost the side vents

while i easily understand the comment about the doors and the pan, i don't understand the connection between eezatoy's comment and the pan - this is a case of a quote not making sense and not needing to be there - the comment is fine by itself without a quote reference

But I do like the 928 back end, somehow that works very well. None of the front treatments work for me, especially not the silver one with the Cayenne bumper.

i don't really like the lines of the 968 - however, i do like most of the platform - i bought this car because it was a very inexpensive car to work with - i knew i could tear it apart and rework it without spending a fortune - to me it is a throw away platform, and not something to collect

i hate the reverse curves everywhere - the concave hips and front bumper lines drive me nuts - i also don't like any of the hard edges along the body lines - those will all go away with the new body

what i want to do is create my own vision of what the perfect 968 would look like - it would be smooth connecting curves, all function oriented to improve the compromised aerodynamics (the 944 was better) - the headlights would be incorporated into the skin, and there would be no speed robbing reverse curves

this is a part of a larger plan to strip out all the non-essential garbage that porsche put in the car, and strip it down to the car it could be - i expect to end up at about 2500lbs and 360hp in street legal form, all without giving up any creature comforts

this won't be happening on the blue car or the white one, but rather with at least 1 and likely 2 more i don't yet have (one street and one race) - i expect that when i am done i will be at about $80k each and able to compete with just about any super car out there

obviously this is a very long term project, and not an easy one - i will be searching for a couple more chassis soon enough though, and finally get onto this

What happened to the 'love it for what it is rather than hate it for what it's not'? I think the 968 is the best looking convertible, top up, I have ever seen, period. Top down it looks great too, and would look better with the boot flush, but I still think it looks great. I am spending money to bend it back to new. I would never want to plant a 911 face on that car. I could buy a cheap Boxter for that.

Bob, clearly you have a creative need, expressed through automotive design and modification, that far exceeds the vast majority of your fellow 968 owners. Make mine clean, fast, and straight, and I am happy [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img]

Flash, when you're all done and then tired of it, I'll buy it for half of what you spent. Of course, that's assuming it has no issues and is really and truly "done"...I think you know what I mean.

Until then, unless someone comes up with a decent "pop-up delete", my 968 and I will continue to be a team - failings and all. After all, neither of us is perfect.

I'm with you there. To me, the Arktech fender modification which allowed the use of 993 lights that don't stick up above the fender line made that purple car (if it lost the other bling they added to it) one of the prettiest things I've ever seen on 4 wheels. lol - relax guys - i do love it for what it is

that doesn't stop me from wanting to build the car of my dreams - nobody makes it now or ever did - i've looked at just about everything - i have very specific needs and desires, and i have yet to find a car that fits them all - there are parts of this car or that, but one car that has all of them does not exist

the 968 would make for a decent platform for it though

i want:

a chassis capable of 1.2G in street trim - just about there now
a chassis capable of handling 350ft/lb of torque - got that one figured out too
a suspension that doesn't beat me up but can handle hard driving and remain flat - got it
2 seat front engine rear drive manual trans ragtop - got it
capable of carrying 2 cases of wine, 2 sets of golf clubs, a weekend of luggage, and the wife - got it
air conditioning capable of cooling me top down in 100 degree weather - just about there
an engine with at least 275ft/lb and 325hp - i think i have that figured out
smooth curvy "british sportscar styled" body lines - no ridges or lines - gotta work on that

the big one is going to be the weight - this car is heavy - it's going to take a lot more modification to trim that fat

i could start with an MGB again, and end up with a very quick very light monster - i can even get around most of the rest of the issues, and there is a very nice body kit for it - what i would not have though is the comfort and civility i have now with the 968

i almost bought a jag and supercharged it, but then there is the weight and handling again

i keep looking at a 355, but it's a no go on the storage

as i said, no perfect car - but this one could be awfully close

remember too that i am not limited to just one 968 - in the end i will probably have 5 or 6 of them - i've always been a collector - i still miss the collection i sold when i moved to los angeles - i plan to keep the white one pretty stock, just because i like it that way - the blue one will likely stay pretty much as is too - i am talking about a totally new car - i want to start from a raw tub and see what i can do, right down to the dash being totally different - i want to build one for the street and one for track - both cabs

Two quick points you made me think of.

A few weeks ago, I was listening to a radio interview of an Indy league driver. He was asked about the physical conditioning he goes through, and "Why? You're just sitting in a car and driving it." In his response, he described the 5,000 pounds of downforce that the cars generate, allowing them to corner at 5Gs - and that he has to be in sufficient physical condition to tolerate that for hours. Pretty impressive cornering.

Second, re collecting. See http://www.dauerclassiccars.com/ for a collection that a friend has. It might not be exactly your speed, but it's still quite something. And, this is just one of his 15 or so serious collecting hobbies, which include stamps, currency, documents, and more.

i regret letting my collection go - it took 15 years to put it together, most of the work being done myself - but times change and so do circumstances - there was no way to keep them all here

so, now i'm building again, one at a time - i'll be working on the TR4 next, but once that's done, then i'll likely be onto the next 968

i may yet purchase the 355 though, just because i want one, but it won't really change anything regarding the next 968

frankly what is holding me back is space and a lift, neither of which are particularly easy here

I have a good friend who was born and raised in Lithuania and later moved (immigrated) to Germany to work. I asked him about Porsche owners in Lithuania. His response was, "probably all were stolen in Poland or maybe Czech (via German tourists etc).

The car you describe would indeed be a spectacular and highly desirable machine. Oddly, though, if I didn't know any better, I'd say you're describing a C6 Corvette convertible, especially in terms of the luggage capacity. You'd have to go out and buy a 6" x 9" silver belt buckle, though...

Thinking of other cars that come close to meeting your criteria (the front-engine stipulation makes it challenging, because most supercars tend to come with the engine behind the driver), other than the aformentioned C6, the one that comes to mind is the BMW Z8. Very rare (and therefore, last time I checked, stubbornly immune to depreciation), and drop-dead gorgeous.

I hear what you're saying about the curvy, British sportscar look. I had a '65 Austin-Healey BJ8 for a number of years. An utter dog of a car, but it was so beautiful I actually got tired of all the attention it generated. A beautiful, beautiful car. And since its rear track exactly matched a Jaguar E-Type's, I had toyed with the idea of dropping in a Jag rear-end, and replacing its running gear with something from the latter half of the 20th century, and turning it into something that ran as well as it looked. Ended up selling it and getting a 3rd gen Mazda RX7.

But it sounds like you want to follow Dr. Porsche's model and build something on your own. Sounds like a great project.

don't think i haven't thought about the C6 - i don't like the back end, but the callaway version is nice - can't stand the interior of the car though, which makes it a no-go
