Design 1 Racing announces its new 968 Front Splitter
#1

For a few years now people have been beating me up about when I was going to replicate the splitter on my car. I haven't wanted to take it off the car and leave the car out of commission yet again, but as it need paint now, it seems like a good time to jump into this.

So, I have looked into it, and I can replicate the splitter. I am dropping it off no later than next week to have the mold made. I have already worked out costs and such.

The Splitter will be as seen below (but unpainted). It will be made of fiberglass. Unlike other fiberglass units, this design can take a beating. Those of who were on the Paso Robles Fun Run last year can attest to how well it held up under multiple hits at road speed. The paint got scraped off, but the unit did not shatter.

Also unlike other splitters for this car, it does not "sandwich" between other components of the car. Instead, it replaces the Lower Apron and is a complete unit.

It will mount to factory locations, and require no modification to the car whatsoever. It will come complete with all the necessary hardware and full installation instructions.

I am targeting an introductory retail price of $299. I will confirm that when it goes up on the Design 1 Racing website, as soon as I have the units in hand. I see no reason it should be any different though. I anticipate only a couple of weeks to get them made.

Who's in? Send me an email.

[sup]Looks great - when you say replaces the Lower Apron, are you referring to the part we also refer to as the "bat wing"? What will the default color be when shipped?[/sup]

scott - yes, the front apron is what is often referred to as the bat wing. color will likely be primer white.

due to the size of the unit, i won't be keeping them around here, and will be running them as i need them, in batches. so, as soon as i get it up on the website, i can start taking orders and do the run. i just need to confirm the pricing, and it's really just making sure about the hardware costs, so i should be able to nail that down before the end of the weekend.

shouldn't be a problem with this one. the design is much better than the single edge lip type (like the porsche motorsport unit) which would catch everything and either bend back and destroy the paint, grab something and rip the front end apart, or shatter if it was fiberglass.

the wraparound feature of this design provides for a LOT more structural integrity. i've whacked the neck out of mine countless times, with no discernible damage other than scrapes. i've just been touching it up when i whack it. i'm not saying it's impervious to damage, but it has been really though so far.

i also think it looks more like a part of the car than the sandwiched types

ok. i get to be a prick now. i would never do anything carbon fiber looking, nor sell one to any kid who liked carbon fiber looking stuff. if i ever did anything carbon fiber, it would be primered to hide that nasty outdated cheap looking fad. it was an accident that it was ever seen, was never intended to be unfinished, and looks like something from a nissan, and certainly not the traditional finished look of a porsche. yes, i know that others like it, and even porsche did it. that doesn't mean i have to do it.

rant over.

LOL. Thanks, Flash. Make mine that cool carbon fiber look then...

How does it fit under the car for airflow purposes? I know I've seen it, but can't remember exactly how it looked. I've never had a car so sensitive to what you do in that area. It hates not having that all nice and sealed up.

I know I emailed you directly but just so everyone knows I'm in as well. Glad the batwing (front apron)/airflow question was asked as that was my only concern.

I'm in also.

Since I need to have the rocker panels re-sprayed sometime soon, that would be a good time to do the splitter as well.

sorry. i won't be painting any of these. i don't want the responsibility for that.

there were 2 different midnight blues so we likely do not have the same color, as mine was mixed just for my car. besides that, i have mine color sanded and clearcoated differently.

you're on your own there

sort of

like i said, my midnight blue is not like anybody else's midnight blue. my car tends to look more green than others. also, the difference between early and late midnight blue is significant by itself, with the later one being more purple

sorry. paint is just not something i am interested in doing. there are just too many ways for it to go wrong.

besides, you will have to match drill the unit to fit your car anyway, which would almost certainly screw up the paint.
