Dirt behind clear cover to gauges
#1

Has anyone ever tried to get that plastic cover to the gauge cluster off? It seems to be glued in place or otherwise not meant to be removed. There is a lot of dirt inside the cover on the back and I would like to clean it. Any suggestions that don't require new instrument gauge clusters (either intentional or as an accidental result of my efforts)?

Sure you can remove it.

After disconnecting the assembly from the dash, disconnecting the 3 ribbons and the entire cluster is now ready to come out (after that I suggest coming indoors to a well lit area). Remove several screws along the back of the cluster, that will allow the gauges to separate from the housing. Now you have 4 opening to reach through and clean the inside of the cluster window.

Its really simple, just take your time and pay attention when disconnecting the ribbons.

Hope this helps

I have the same problem with my gauges plastic cover are very scratched and clouded. Would it be the same procedure to change to a new clear plastic cover? Thanks so much

When I took my cluster apart for some mods it was "glued" to the housing.

I had to carefully cut the clear plastic from the gauge housing using a dremel with a cutoff wheel. It was very time consuming.

I may have a another gauge housing in the basement. I also have just the clear plastic piece if someone wants it. Last time I looked at it, it was very clear and scratch free.

I have used plastic polish on the front of the clear panel with great success.

My cover was not glued and came off easily when the attachment screws were removed.

I have had static electricity "suck" debris onto the inside face of the plastic lens, watch out or you will have to take it all apart again!
