DaveN thanks for the reply I am using this paint hope it comes out good. By any chance have u used Wurth flexible trim paint I think it is called it is used to paint the instrument panels arround the gauges in the dash? Thanks Ginger

Andy, I am going to go the bead blast method on mine. Tried the wire brush and did not care for the result. Checked around and the cost of having media blast was not that bad. I really like the urethane letters and may go with that. If you can't find a source in Austin let me know and I will give you a name in Dallas. When I had the Carrera engine rebuilt he had it blasted and clear coated. It looked fantastic.

Thanks; I looked around, and didn't find much in Austin. When I pick up my crank from the machine shop (hopefully before my social security checks start rolling in <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> ), I'll ask the shop if they can recommend anybody. I sure like the bead blasted look, and I'd like to do the intake manifold at the same time. Again, my goal isn't to to win any concours', just to clean everything up thoroughly enough to make things under the hood easier to see.

that's why i like powder coating. they blast it for you. the powder coating looks great, and is really easy to keep clean too.



i'm just about to send out to be done another valve cover and fuel rail cover that i have lying around here

Powder Coating looks great but causes a problem with gasket seal.





I know there wasn't any problems on Bob's car but I had problems with customer cars.

if they don't mask off the gasket surface, powder coating can cause problems. the thickness of the coating puts the gasket in a different position, as well as does not stick to the rubber as well



you need to use a good powder coater. i'm lucky and have a really good one. not cheap though. actually i have 2 different shops, and i choose what i send where, depending on how complicated the job is. one guy gets the simple stuff. the other guy gets things like valve covers.

Just a quick note on fixing minor blemishes on the valve cover, intake manifold, etc... I had picked up a few "spots" on mine, which I think were bits of road grime that sat on hot parts and stained them. I cleaned the stained areas with laquer thinner, which really didn't change anything, and then applied a very dry coat of "Model Maker Chrome Silver" paint that is available at Hobby Lobby (and probably most other hobby shops).

By "Dry Coat", I take a small round camel hair brush, dip just the tip in paint, and then drag it over a page of an old phone book, like you would to load a striping brush. When it is nearrly "dry", I dab the brush into the stained areas, working from the center out, and blending into the original aluminum color.

I got excellent results, with an almost perfect flat or matt finish to match the factory original luster and color.

Pics to follow!!! The nice part is that it can be redone or retouched at any time, without removing any parts!

I'm thinking of having my fuel rail cover powdercoated. Is it ok to continue to drive the car while it is temporarily removed? It appears that it is merely a cover and wouldn't pose any issues. Thanks
