Flash - Out of curiosity, I was looking at the TracQuest DE event at VIR. It's posted that VIR has its own rule about convertibles, and that is: "All convertibles (except Porsche Boxsters – see immediately below) must have roll protection that meets SCCA Solo 1 requirements. Removable hard tops that come with some convertibles aren’t sufficient. The roll bar must span the width of the car (roll hoops unconnected to each other aren’t sufficient) and must have some type of secondary support (a diagonal bar, additional bars in a plane perpendicular to the main roll bar, etc.)." I'm not planning to run in the VIR event (at least, not yet) but - do you think your design meets these requirements?

there are quite a few other requirements besides the diagonal brace for solo 1

the "race" version, with its removeable cross brace, meets all of the requirements - it is not easily removed though, because of one of the other requirements

i'll post all the details as soon as we wrap up the final version - trying desperately to get the shop clear so we can finish this - i have a track day coming up too

Bob,

It seems that, even for a DE, we should go with a basic version of your bar and include a diagonal cross-element option in the order? Don't feel that you need to explain - it looks like when you post all the details it will become clear.

no worries

for most DE events, you wouldn't have to - they only require a bar, but have no specifications at all - there are a couple that require the diagonal brace - in those events, even cars with factory bars, such as the bmw and boxster would also not qualify without additional bracing

the SCCa solo 1 specs have a list of things the bar must meet - the diagonal is but one of them, but i have come up with solutions for the race version, that are not in the DE version that meet all the needs

My next DE will be at the end of October - seems like we should make that one, right? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I really didn't mean that to come across as a jab. I'm truly not upset, and I long ago learned - and maybe accept a little too easily - that everything takes longer than expected. So - I just want the bar by OCTOBER!!!

no worries - wasn't taking it as a jab really - i kind of expected impatience by now - i feel the same frustration about the delay myself, but it is what it is - looks like a light at the end of the tunnel here though

Flash,

We all support you in this and it is never easy to get new design produced. My guess is that most people here would be interested in a simple DE bar, so perhaps you can save some time by pushing off the racing and other versions for later, unless people asked you for these. There is a DE coming up at Lime Rock in August and this is an absolutely awsome track - no pressure....

no worries - no time savings - the race parts are a no brainer addition that won't slow the process

i am in there tomorrow working out the last details - they will be working on the jig while i am in cancun - i should see the first production model sometime right after i get back on the 8th

Andre,

If you're referring to the NY Metro event at Limerock on August 19-20, I'll be instructing at that event...what run group are you in?

Too bad - that's the weekend I leave for our family summer vacation. Otherwise, since I'll be roll-bar-equipped by then, I would have done the Lime Rock DE. I need a change of pace from Watkins Glen.

Jim,

Do you have reason to believe you will be roll bar equipped by the end of August?

I assumed I would be missing all the DEs this summer waiting for this roll bar to be available.

Bob is at the roll bar guy right now as we speak, he just stopped by on the way down. If he survives the holiday traffic getting home, I'm sure he'll update.

ok - roll bar is out of my car and back at the shop for jigging and going into production - modifications and updates were a no brainer - all looks good - i will see the completed updated version when i get back from cancun and double check fitment at that time - then it's off to the production run - everyone can expect to be able to place their order the 13th, and shipping should commence somewhere around the first

i'll update with new pics and options and pricing and all of that when i get back and see the final version

Bruce, I was confident of end of August before Flash's update. Now I'm even more so. At the least, that'll mean that I can run with the Blue group when I do the TracQuest event at the end of October in Watkins Glen. Maybe I'll try a PCA event in September.

Jason,

So far, I am only allowed to do Novice events at Pocono, since my cab doesn't have the roll bar. If Bob comes through with the bar in time, I will be in the Green run group. It is only fair that I won't be signed off right away at the new track, in spite of several years of autoX experience and pretty fast laps at Pocono.

BTW, I just got my 3rd autoX class win of the season running in a four-car class this Sunday!
