indexing torsion bar ... How to ... DIY ?
#1

It is time to replace shocks. I am leaning towards Ground Control coil overs with a slight increase in rate. I will be keeping the stock torsion bars. I know i need to lower the rear torsion bar so we can add some prelaod to the rear springs. Ground Control shocks are about 1" shorter than stock so the car will be ran slightly lower.
I used search but did not find an answer.
Thanks

there is no easy answer - reindexing the torsion bars always ends up in a trial and error process - the outer spline count is different than the inner spline count

this gets doubly complicated when talking about adding the pre-load of a coil spring

i did see a chart once that basically said "to lower X distance rotate inner end counter-clockwise Y spines and control arm relative to outer end clockwise Z splines" - no idea where that is anymore - i just deleted the torsion bars altogether, rather than go through that 8 hour process the three times everyone said it would be

good luck

What is the benefit to keeping the Torsion bar active when upgrading the suspension?

a torsion bar has a somewhat more progressive effect than a coil spring

as it is also a dual acting spring (resists in both compression and extension from neutral) it can also help prevent a car from getting tail light under braking

the other advantage for a street car is the fact that the rubber outer bushing is retained, which makes for a quieter and more compliant ride

in a race car this works to your disadvantage, as that same bushing flexes and allows lateral load shift

in a perfect world i would have torsion bars - i knew i was going to be making a lot of changes though, and i did not want to go through that process

I found the following http://944spec.org/944SPEC/content/view/42/25/ web page by doing a quick search on Google.
"indexing torsion bars" also you might e-mail Bruce Anderson via PCA.
