CAB ROLL BAR
#1

it looks like i finally found a fabricator for the cab roll bar - i have a meeting with him at noon tomorrow

preliminary indications are that we will have a bar that allows for:

true bolt in application

full clearance for seat reclining

no cutting of side panels

no drilling in chassis

full utilization of factory windscreen

full function of top

full compliance with SCCA and PCA for DE events

pricing looks like it might come in just under the autopower - availability looks like the first part of april - all transactions will be directly with the fabricator - i'm just doing the design work and getting this going

i need to compile the list of interested parties

please email me asap so i can make this happen

As far as I know PCA has not published standard roll bar specs for DE events. However, if you comply with the PCA club racing specs, you certainly won't be turned away at a PCA DE. The PCA club racing specs can be found here on page 20:

so far, all of the organizations i have contacted, that put together de events, including the local chapter of pca, only require a bar, with very few specs, and not nearly what the racing rules require - it's much the same relaxation as with the seat and seat belt rules - you can drive with the stock seats and belts

scca is a lot stricter on their driver ed events

i'm not sure i want to go as far as to qualify it for racing, though it won't be hard to do - it would require a plate on the back side of the mounting and bolting through the car, as well as cutting the carpet under the plates - this is fine if you are giong to leave the bar in the car and go racing, but certainly won't make the street guy happy

the guage and size and bends of the tubing will meet spec - the terminations will be large plates - it will attach to he chassis - we'll see where it goes from there

autopower starts at 279 and goes up from there, depending on what other things you add, like a harness bar, or a diagonal brace

Another one in!

Cab's should of came with one, if you have ever seen the results of one turned over you'll soon realize how 'exposed' you are.

Flash, what will the finish be?

Could get them powder-coated to a matching color, ...my intention...

meeting went GREAT!!!

everything is in line with what i had hoped - i will have the prototype in about a week and a half

price is set to be competitive with the autopower, but features are much better

i'll post shots as soon as it's done

email me guys - not pms - i need a list so i can send out a batch email when it's done, and it will be a lot easier that way: flash@9magazine.com

A couple of questions:

1) When you say SCCA this means SCCA Solo I?

2) Wall thickness and overall diameter of tubing?

3) Any loss of seat travel or recline?

4) How far back from the headrest will this be? I don't want to have to wear a helmet on the street

there will be multiple versions of the bar - the primary motivation of this project was to get a bar that allowed cabs to get out in DE events, without losing the aestheitcs or any features of the car - the focus was not racing - however, we did want ot keep this in mind, and i designed one that can be easily upgraded to meet those specs

the base version will be DE and autocross compliant with both organizations - their standards there are very simple, and frankly dictated by the tracks - we anticipate no loss of seat travel with stock seats and this bar - the bar will be behind the seat back, and allow enough clearance for the required padded addition for the race version - we see no issues with anyone without a helmet being able to bang their head

the upgraded version will be compliant in solo I and II events, but, just like any bar, including the autopower, will require removal of the carpet under the mounting plates, and addition of matching mounting plates on the back side of the sheet metal, and an additional removeable diagonal bar and harness bar

construction will be 3/16 thick mouting plates, and 1.5" .120 wall steel

hope that helps

Hey Flash, just curious about the status on this project. No rush. I'm sure that with your accident, you've had plenty of other things to take care of. Just wondering the estimated timing on this.

dent fixed - paint done - back on track

i'm with the guy tomorrow morning woking on the mounting plates - then we bend and weld - expect to have a working model on thursday evening - barring any more 17 year old kids in minivans, will have it installed by "toys in spring" event and ready for photos

Any idea how much this sucker is going to weigh? I don't want it to slow me down too much.

guessing about 35# - certainly going to make it as light as possible and still meet spec

the basic DE bar will be the lightest - the kits for SCCA Solo racing will be a few pounds more though, as will the harness bar - all of these are add-ins

I can't wait to see how you've designed this to meet the numerous goals. Very exciting (and, within reason, I really don't care how much it weighs - it will get me out of the Yellow run group).

I think that all are appreciative of the efforts that Flash makes, especially us "cab people".
