CAB ROLL BAR
#21

just got back - WOOHOO!!!

i dropped off the drawings and mock ups for the mounting plates - those should be done in a day or so - then i'm back down there to bend up the hoop and tack up the rest of the pieces - on track for working prototype by friday

version 1: DE/Autocross bar - basic single hoop with 2 legs - straight bolt in (slight box mod)

version 2: same as above with removeable harness bar

version 3: Racing bar - same as above, but with metal to metal plates requiring drilling, but meets SCCA solo 1 and 2 spec - also with removeable diagonal bar

here we go

still on the project - the guy's plama cutter crapped out - hoping to be able to knock out prototype monday and/or tuesday - really want it in for nethercutt - if he can't get it done by then though, it will have to wait until the following monday - too many things going on wednesday through friday to deal with it

SUCCESS!!!

everything worked perfectly - here are some preliminary shots of the prototype - i will have some more finished shots on monday - there are some changes to be made to the lower bracket, and a couple of other features added, but this should give you the idea

this is what it looks like in the car

this is where it mounts on the front (looking down in passenger side)

this is how the side mounts

this is it out of the car on the ground ready for finish welding and painting and installation of harness bar

the "race version" will have additional parts that add to this that make it legal for solo competition events

thanks - it really fits nicely - drops in and out very easily

notice how snugly it hugs the side - you can still sit the kids in the back

in the final version, the lower mounting brackets will be joined, becoming one longer bracket, instead of 2 independent ones, which will be even stronger - we needed to do the 2 seperate ones for prototyping

i will post the mods to the windscreen soon - very simple - it only involves removal of the 2 forward legs (i have added tabs on the roll bar to take their place) and substitution of the rear legs with ones i will provide as a side kit - very simple mod

i'm very proud of this bar - i can't wait for everybody to see it

Bob that thing is sick! I love the sleek look and the brackets just awesome. I think this is a great improvement over what is currently on the market. Great job!

Is the rear luggage deck (no idea what this piece is called, the flat storage box thing that covers up the seats) able to be installed with the bar?

Mark, the answer is yes. The compartments have little wings in the corners that will need to be modified, but they will fit fine. That was one of the primary purposes for Bob taking on this task.

Great Work Bob!

That thing looks great!

I am so impressed that I am ready to buy one before you announce the price. Please let me know when they are ready and I will take an unpainted one.

Thanks

I like Bruce even more when he brings Jessica with him. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Not to hijack the thread...

Great work Bob! I also am going to buy one of those bad boys. What color will they be painted? My cab is midnight blue, can I get it painted to match? Would that even look good/right?

wow - i'm blushing - it can come unpainted for sure - currently we were just going to shoot it semi gloss balck - certainly you can get anything done, but this guy is not a painter - i'm not sure what he has planned for finish, but i will be having that conversation in the next day or two

i designed it, but am passing the fabrication and all transactions directly to him - i don't want to go into thte roll bar business, and really just wanted to come up with something that worked - i'm happy to let everybody else reap the rewards by eliminating myself as a markup stop - this means better pricing to you, and easier business for him

pricing will be in line with the autopower pricing - the main advantages are that is a straight bolt in, requires no cutting of your side panels, is easily upgradeable to race spec, and allows all components and features of the car to continue to be available, including the wind stop, the back seats, the top, the reclining of the seats (as long as you don't have the removeable diagonal or harness bar in place), the seatbacks, and with a slight modification to the storage boxes, you can leave those in too

whew - very happy this worked out as planned - very happy to be able to help everybody out

if time allows, i'll pick it up this week - if not, monday or tuesday - should be ready for production by the first of the month

What finish are you going with? I recommend powdercoating or leather. Painting will flake overtime.

ok - talked to the guy - here's what we're going to do - unfinished, painted black, powder coated black - each finsih will affect the end price - i'll have numbers in the next couple of days - powdercoating is pretty cheap though, so don't worry

this is so fun

I like what I see so far. Nice work, man!

I would like to see some more pics of it installed in the car, specifically it's height in relation to the seat backs. I'm 6'3" and most roll bars would split my melon in a rear-ender!

Not to seem too anxious - but I need one powdercoated black in time for my next DE at Watkins Glen in three weeks. OK, that's probably asking too much, but - nothing ventured, nothing gained.

LOOKS GREAT, FLASH. Kudos.

sayporsche - the bar sits about 4 insches above the top of the seats that i have - i'll post "broomstick" pics when i put it in the car

anchorman - i think we can do that, depending on shipping - he should have the first run done about the 7th or so

i'll have all the rest of the details monday or tuesday

thanks for hanging in there guys

Flash - this looks terrific.

One (maybe stupid) question. Since all of the mounting points are seatbelt mounts, do the seatbelts re-install over the rollbar mounts (same bolts, longer bolts?), or what?

Put me on the list, you've got an email.
