I've been running 10w40 Premium Amsoil in mine. The premium has the added zinc in it.

Be careful of the ZDDP content in any oil you use. If it doesn't say it has added Zinc or you can't find the content level, plan on adding a bottle of ZDDP additive to your oil.

Mobil 1 15w-50 synthetic. Recognizing the importance of zinc and phosphorus levels, I quickly researched the levels in the Mobil 1 15w-50 and the Amsoil Premium 10w-40
Amsoil: Phosphorous: 1265 parts per million, Zinc: 1378 parts per million
Mobil 1 15w-50: Phosphorous: 1200 parts per million, Zinc: 1300 parts per million

Pleasantly surprised at how close they are.

Yes the Mobil1 15w50 is a good choice for ZDDP, they left it in that weight oil for the older engines, the had a older blend that removed it and people complained so they brought it back. I use to run M1 15w50 but switched out for a little thinner oil.

Great information ! Thank you. Why are the zinc and phosphorus levels important in an older engine ?

They provide the extra anti wear agents needed to keep our cams and what not from wearing away.

"Recognizing the importance of zinc and phosphorus levels..."

Mythology. I defy anybody to supply data from a controlled test comparing the wear patterns in identically driven engines across a long enough mileage horizon (at least 100K miles in a modern engine) run with oils across the testing period with specifially variant zinc and phosphorous levels (which would have to be monitored at regular intervals troughout the test). So much information associate with oil is conjecture, urban legend, educated opinion, etc., simply because performing a test such as I've described above is utterly impractical.

If you really want to be sure you're using the best possible oil for your particular engine, have an oil analysis done by an experienced analyst, such as Terry Dyson. Depending on your engine's wear patterns, tendency for fuel dilultion, and the like, the analyst might be able to recommend an oil which is the best match for your engine. But lacking that, just go with a quality synthetic oil (Red Line and Amsoil are among the most popular), and change it every 5000-7500 miles, or once a year, whichever comes first (more frequently if you track the car). And use a good filter, such as K & N.

Edit: I just realized I didn't answer your question about oil weight. I think 10W40 in a synthetic is appropriate for most climates. The manual recommends 15W50, but that was for dino oil, as synthetics weren't being used a whole lot when these cars were built.

i can definitely recommend AGAINST royal purple - there have been some tests done lately as a result of some complete engine failures that have shown that stuff to be flat out dangerous if you get the car hot

Thoughts on Brad Penn 10W 40, which is a partial synthetic?

My mechanic just put 20W-50 Amsol in mine. Seems a bit thick, but I do like to run her hot ;P)

I'm using mostly Amsoil 5-40, but last change I mixed in 2 Qts of Amsoil 10-40 as well.

Just did a bunch of maintenance, including oil change. Went with Amsoil Premium 10W 40. Change was pretty simple and actually not much of a mess. Used a turkey basted to siphon remaining oil after removing the oil filter.

"Is anyone using Shell Rotella T 15-40 or Rotella T6 Full Syn 5-40? "

I didn't think anybody would ask, but yes, as a matter of fact, I'm using the T6 Full Syn 5-40. It was recommended by the guy who performed my oil analyses, because he said the Rotella does a good job of standing up to fuel dilution, which my engine suffers from (very common on these engines). Of course, I can't say I can tell any difference between it and any other oil I've ever used. I will say that I went about 4000 miles on my first batch of the Rotella, and though I admit I drove the car pretty moderately on that batch, I was till amazed that it used not one thimbleful of oil.

Thanks Cloud,

I changed it this past weekend over to T6 Syn; So far so good. I am unsure what the PO had in the engine before this feels much better (may have been 20-50 or SAE 30?). Also, lost ten pounds when I cleaned out all of the under trays...
