front brakes
#61

lol - it's a sickness for sure, but at the moment i am actually having a resurgence of energy on this stuff - i was in a lull for a while there - not sure what was up, but i felt bogged down - now, for whatever reason, i have a LOT of energy

could be that i realized that the ferrari was going to have to wait for a while, since there are so many other things going on at the moment, i am incredibly busy with new real work, and the housing market is in the dumper, so we aren't going to buy the ranch for probably a year and a half - that created a window of opportunity for me to work on new projects during that time, so....................

you can expect to see a few new things pop up between now and spring, some in the next couple of weeks - some of the things have already been talked about, started, and will now get finished - some are brand new

as they say, film at 11

It's obvious from your first line that your problem was, indeed, constipation

Glad you've worked it out!

yeah - rolling along - it's actually sort of fun to do this stuff, but the motivation does seem to come in spurts

I'm happy to say my Mintex pads are close to needing replacement. I used them on advice of a P-car mechanic. Dusty mothers, is about all I have to say for them.

Then again, I did make a deputy sheriff lock up the tires of his Crown Vic when he was tailgating me. Then he pulled me over to write me a ticket for "swerving," which was dismissed in court this past Thursday.

+1 on the Mintex pads. I just switched to BHP (on RS Barn's reccomendation) excellent grip, easy to seat and so far little squeal. I washed the wheels yesterday, so I will report back on dust.

Changing pads was the wife's idea since the squealing brakes were driving her nuts!

Of course, "standard maintenance" required a change to cross drilled rotors as well , I love my wife!

Regards,

Jay

I am now the owner of a set of 928 S4 calipers. I'll be having them sent by the seller directly to RS Barn to confirm that they are the right calipers to be the next step in giving me more brakes. Once we confirm that they're right, I'll be sending them to Goldline Brakes to be rebuilt and made silver. Then they'll come back to RS Barn for installation on my car. So - if anyone is interested in almost-new stock front calipers (in silver) and not-almost-new stock rear calipers, let me know. If all goes well, my calipers will be available by early March.

From a GTS or S4? I thought the S4 brakes were the same as the 968's? The GTS brakes are the ones sometimes referred to as Big Black.

IIRC, the 928S4 brakes are the same size as the 968M030 brakes.

928GTS brakes are bigger than the 928S4/968M030 and are often times called Big Blacks. "Big Reds" are the same size as the 928GTS brakes, but just mounted differently (trailing versus leading I believe or something like that, but don't quote me).

I think that's right. Having driven an M030 coupe recently, I believe the brakes are considerably stronger than the stock 968 non-M030 brakes.

Does anybody know if Zimmerman cross-drilled rotors can be turned, or do they have to be replaced? If they can be turned, what's the minimum thickness? I thought I saw 26 mm somewhere. I need a new set of front pads, so I'm going to go with the Porterfield R4S's everybody seems to be so happy with, and am hoping I don't need a new set of rotors as well. I just looked at my rotors today while rotating my tires side-to-side, and they appear to be in excellent condition. Thanks.

yes, assuming you find a machinist who will do it - many won't

I also drove lately a stock 968. But driven my own 968 tip with the original M030 brake and suspension factory kit is awesome compared to the stock version. Maybe I do have a strange combination. Tip with M030.

It is good to hear that 928 discs will fit. The 32 mm thick brakes from the M030 suspension cost a lot and are hardly to get in the aftermarket. Nobody advertise with them. Does anybody knows an affordable source?

Just like Flash says, the general shop guys DO NOT want to turn cross drilled or slotted rotors as it eats up their bits and can cause microcracks at the holes.

If they are not badly 'record' grooved from the pads or glazed or warped, you can just lightly buff them up with an abrassive scotch pad or wire brush on a high speed air gun or by hand. I have many times just put a new set of pads on front rotors without doing anything and after the pads seat (about 1000 miles), everything works fine. Just inspect the rotors closely for cracks and that you take measurements in several clock face areas to maintain minimal thickness per manufacturer.

If they are badly glazed, warped, or groved, get new set .

Thanks, Unknown. You've helped me feel much better about going the M030 brake route rather than something much more aggressive - and expensive, like Big Reds or Big Blacks. I'll keep everyone posted. Right now, the calipers are on their way to RS Barn to confirm fit and condition.

Note:

Anything larger than S-4 Calipers and discs creates an imbalance in front to rear bias even with the Turbo Cup bias valve.

I don't think Big reds or blacks are the way to go

So, does that mean that the right path would be to change the rears as well as the fronts?

Pete.

Have you ever tried fitting the "big reds" on the front with the standard fronts fitted to the rear. And what that might acheive.???? Ide be interested to find out...

PS , a m8 of mine has the Big red callipers fitted up front with the bias valve fitted + doesnt seem to have any problems....

As discussed somewhere earlier, I purchased Stoptech Braided/coated brake lines. HOWEVER, they arrived and the rears fit fine, the fronts were way too short. The exact same problem I had with the German set and another USA set (do they all use the same source for sizing??) I called the vendor and they were very nice about a refund, but I really wanted to get the lines. So I called stoptech directly.

I have to say that Pat at stoptech is a super guy. He replied to my emails the same day and was on the ball about getting the right lines. Apparently, there was some mix up in their catalogue and ALL retailers have the wrong information regarding 968 front brake lines. Of course, I had to be the first to call....

So we discussed options, and he, at company cost, sent me a new set for the front WITH the grommet and the right length. Nice to run into people who still care about their products.

If you plan to get a set from them, be sure to use the correct number for the fronts..it IS NOT the one listed on vendor's sites.

I will post pics and order numbers soon.

Its probably because the ones they have listed are to fit a M030 equiped car.

The M030 cars have a hard pipe between the strut + calliper.

The standard car has longer front brake lines, as they dont have the hard pipe...
