Wobble Under Heavy Braking

I seem to remember reading something about build-up (?) on new rotors from new pads causing uneven braking or "wobble". I can't find it. Either I was dreaming it or I'm simply lost. Can anyone offer a suggestion?



Oh, yes, I have the problem. That's why I'm asking.

improper break in can cause build up which can make for a very unpleasant wobble



failure to surface rotors before installing new pads can do it too



unfortunately the only real solution is to surface the rotors - you can try just sanding them down, but it doesn't work at least half the time - you will also need to scuff the pads, and perhaps replace them again



bad castor blocks can also cause this, so before you go yanking rotors and turning them, check those out carefully



a trick we used to do on the race cars, to insure break in of new pads, after some 100 grit sandpaper, was to take a box knife and scratch a hash pattern in the pad - the rough surface baked in nicely and all but eliminated break in problems - lol - lots of dust right away though

If you use sandpaper, make sure it is Garnet Paper not just regular sand-paper which can make it worse.



Wobble can also be tie-rod ends.

interesting - i've never had tie rod ends do that, though i have had a lot of wander and bump steer as a result of worn ones

Thanks, guys. While my tie rod ends may be (probably are) worn, I didn't have the problem until changing rotors and pads this summer. Since I didn't turn the wrenches myself, I can't attest to exactly what was done. However, it is a Porsche specialty shop that also does race prep, so they should know what to do. It could very well be improper break-in, as that was up to me. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wub.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />



My cars going back into the shop for some routine maintenance, so I'll have them check. Thanks for the tips.
