did the air box mod
#21

i have the engine bay trim! i actually just put it back in. u could get the upper front bumper piece like what you can get for the 951 with the intercooler cut out and funnel the air from the intercooler cut out. hmmm this could be a fun project.

Thanks guys, I would not have guessed. Good thing for the Forum.

Possibly the world's cheapest velocity stack. But before I vandalize the other toilets, I wonder what comments I might get. A bit hard to see but it's funnel shape. It turns out the diameter is exactly the size of my holes. It will stick out of the air box 1"and into the air box 5/8".

Imagine four of these... Mmmm, yes, the rubber thingy is missing from the bracekt on the left. OMG, my airbox is loose.

I am going to get 4 of these.

Is this waht you found Flash?

50 mm ID x 70 mm long Velocity Stacks
2 mm spun Aluminium
Dimensions: 50 mm Base ID; 84 mm Bellmouth OD
Designed to improve airflow into the induction system

$28 each

I think they also have 52 mm x 70 mm

georges - no - that will have the same turbulence issues - at a bare minimum, the lip MUST be curved to avoid that - tapered run is even better

smokie - yes - just trying to determine the right length now

Joel,

To insert the 951 intercooler duct you need to cut/modify/remove the Aluminum front bumper. It is also very small and most likey only helps at 100mph or so.

The Fitgerald larger duct is designed to work with the 968S front bumper and is a hassle to fit.

ya i was just thinking not the exact 951 bumper but just that sorta design, with the intercooler duct. say the opening was larger would it make a difference at all? and if so how big would you think the duct would have to be? just curious.

Joel,

On the 951 the inlet for the intercooler is only 1 inch and expands to 3.5 inch or so to the intercooler. Not extremely effecient but it works.

The 968TS opening is much larger and lets the intercooler duct start at 2" and grow to 4" to match the face of the intercooler with the hood exit. Very effecient!!!!

I know what a pain it is to do, but with the growing list of options surrounding the air box mod (length/shape of velocity stacks, presence/absence of engine bay trim, deletion of front bumper to increase air flow), do you have any plans of quantifying the impact of at least a few of these options on a dyno? I have the engine bay trim, so I'm intrigued about the possibility of squeezing a few more horsepower of of an "airbox mod mod" (I've already done the original with 968 Engineering's rings), but would like to see how much benefit to expect before investing about $120 in velocity stacks. Yes, they do look cool, but since they'd be under the engine bay trim, they wouldn't be visible. Thanks.

i am not expecting large gains there - since the 4 holes only represent a portion of the entire opening, the gain from those alone would be limited - i'm expecting 1-2hp at peak - what should also improve though is throttle response - working something out for the big mouth is going to be a challenge, but likely where another improvement will be from something like this

while i do plan to dyno the setup, dyno testing probably won't show it all, as it is almost impossible to create the same ram effect of driving 80mph

unfortunately for the process, the logistics have gotten tougher, as i now need another car on which to test things - i've gone so far with mine that it is nearly impossible to get accurate results when talking about something like this

if u can give me optimal dimensions for the velocity stacks, how far they should pertrude into the air intake, how wide the mouth should be, how tall it should be. im going to mill my own. ill start with wood for the proto types, and then ill prob do the finals out of aluminum. ya so i can make one for the large middle opening as well. i could also make a mold and make them out of fiber glass as well. not that the weight savings would make a difference but fiberglass is somewhat easy to work with.

Doubt if there would be much profit in this but once you have the mold, assuming the proto is successful, why not look into a production run.

I have yet to get the rings, well the right rings, to finish off my ABM and would appreciate something 968 specific. 968 engineering had the plastic ones and it appears they sold well. So well that he was sold out before I could place my order.

I am sure where ever he sourced the rings from, still manufactures them. Someone just needs to find the distributer. Mc MasterCarr, perhaps?

he sourced them locally - they no longer exist - no idea where that store got them from - they looked exactly like the units at crutchfield

I did something similar with my setup, except I used a black PVC pipe connector that was tapered. I bought some files and spent a couple hours of intense grinding to make a reasonable looking velocity stack.

http://www.968forums.com/index.php?s=&...ost&p=39608

The pictures you see are of the "stacks" before I had them cut down to size even further. In total I think all four cost me $4 or something. And I may buy a few more, take them to a machine shop, and get these stacks shaped properly on a lathe or something. The biggest issue I have with my setup is that even though my holes are 2-1/4", the PVC connector is quite thick, and reduces the hole size to something like 2-1/8" (with a 2-3/4" opening)

Honestly I don't know how much these stacks would actually help versus the tube ports. They do have a cool factor, but there is also this huge gaping hole where the snorkel used to be which probably gets most of the air anyways.

I thought the ones at crutchfield were a bit too small or large. Is the link you posted earlier the desired size?

If you are going to put them on a lathe, you could open the I.D. to the optimal diameter.

You will be left with a thinner wall thickness, which should not be a problem.

the ones at crutchfield are the correct diameter - larger does nothing for further gain - we tested that - the filter surface area is the primary limiting factor there
