air box mod / running trouble now

I recently did the air box mod and K&N filter found on this forum.

When I did it, it was a dry 65 degree day/night. Drove the car and felt great with no issues in all RPM ranges.



The car sat for two days, today I jump in for a ride and it's hesitating and chugging under 2K RPM, not consistently or under any particular load; at slight pedal/full pedal. It's a 45-50 degree and heavy air damp today. At 3K and above there are no issues.



I would assume that the mass air sensor compensates for air temp, humidity etc. If this just a coincidence or are they related? Too much air? A possible sign of the mass air going bad?

Is the idle rough? If the idle is rough, I suspect a leaky vacuum hose or connection and the condition is unrelated to the airbox mod. If your idle is smooth, then I don't know. It certainly could be the mass air sensor or it might just be a flaky connection somewhere. How are your spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor?

Ihave to agree with that Idid the same mod and have had no trouble,

that small mod shouldn't have that big of an effect. Good luck <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Check fault codes, it could be a hall sensor.



BTW: I to did the air box mod with out problems

Would I get an indictaion somewhere that a code is off?

I checked all the obvious vacum lines and conections on the MAS air.

I assume the hall sensor is the one in the air inlet?

The "check engine" light will somtimes come on when a code gets set, not always though;

things like the hall sensor sets a code but not the CES(check engine soon) light (on US cars this is called a soft code).

The 1 hall sensor is near the top of the timing chain on about the cam cover, I'm not fully sure where the 2nd one is (bottom of engine at the rear I think?). If you havent already; get a copy of the workshop manual from the site, very useful

I too did the airbox mod to my stock 968 and had the same problems. Before the mod the car ran normally. Afterwards it felt like it was running lean, or like a motorcycle jetted wrong. I spoke to Pete at RS Barn and he was very familiar with the problem and recommend his ignition chip. I now have the chip installed and the problem is gone.

1st off I'm sure that there are many things that can go wrong with any car at any time, reason I say this is not to discount any ones opinion as to what may have happened to their car similarly or suggestions made about my issue. So with great SHAME <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> here is what happened to mine.



I did do the air box mod, which by the way is way cool, sound etc.

After doing so (which I forgot) I decide to clean the engine bay. Now, having owned too many cars, I have almost never flogged the engine with water etc knowing how sensitive electrical components can be. So maybe too many beers are to blame.



So the car is shuttering, bogging etc and I’m freaking out a bit thinking what the hell is wrong now. I stop at the mechanic after work today to get his take. We pop the hood check all the normal things, vacuum hose, O2 sensor, condensation in the rotor. Whala I remember the wash. We take the plug wires out. About one cup of soap and water, a vacuum, air hose, wurth cleaner, a rag and 1/2 hour later the car was restored to running condition.



The moral is to always check the obvious 1st....sorry for the length of this reply I figured I better come up with a good story.



One other note. The mechanic in question has been with me for the last three years for this new car and my race car. Honest and outstanding work to say the least. I’d put their technical knowledge and customer service against anyones. I have been to other shops that may have blown this out to financial proportions etc. These guys have never done that. So they deserve a plug...

Does that mean you had water in your spark plug wells? That sounds like it could cause the problem you had.

I'll put a big plug in for Paddock, too!



They've helped me out of a very tough spot when my ex-mechanic told me to kiss off and refused to stand behind his work and fix an issue I had with my car.

I bought a 95 968 a few years ago that had same water problem. Previous owner thought he'd clean engine bay before delivering to me. He couldn't understand why it shuddered all the way to my house. I pulled the plug wires out to find the wells had water in them. Dryed them out and all ok.

BTW, I've found on most 968's when you mod airbox they need a chip (which provides more fuel) or they run lean and bog at low rpm

My body shop had my hood off, and got cought by a small shower of rain. When I got my car back it ran like you described. It took me a few days but I found my plug slots filled with water. What a beautiful sight, I thought something really bad had happened.

Funny thing is that these wires are new. I checked the top end for dry cracks etc. Possibly since i just serviced the car and checked the plugs they where not seated all the way down??

I missed the issue of 9 Magazine that published the airbox mob article. I would like to do this upgrade, but the magazine wouldn't respond to my e-mail requests to order that issue. Is there any way to download this article or find it on the web? Also, how does this mod compare with a cone filter installation? One can loose the airbox altogether with the cone filter, but perhaps there is some downside to it?



Any advice would be highly appreciated.

believe it or not, the cone filter is not as effective - we tested the components, and found more resistance and more heat transfer, resulting in less power



the magazine used to have the article up in a DIY section, but since the revamp of the website, it isn't there anymore - many changes going on there
