is there a perfect running turbo car?
#1

ok - starting over, since apparently i was not clear enough before

i'm curious - there is always talk about turbos and how great they are (i'm not interested in talking about superchargers right now, or any projects "in developement") - everybody raves about the power and all that - there is no arguing how nice it would be to have more power - the problem has always been getting it "right" on a street car - i haven't heard of one yet that is perfect - the 951 ran like a top, so clearly turbos can be done on the inline 4 by porsche - the turbo S ran well too, with no known issues, so it seems it can be done in the 968 as well (albeit at only 305hp)

i know a lot of people have tried, but all i keep hearing is about unfinished or unreliable project cars - they either run hot, or run rich, or need tuning, or the wastegate isn't working right, or somebody burned it up, or some other lame thing

so here is the question: other than the handful of production models, does anybody have one that is actually DONE? by done i mean a 3 liter street car that has ZERO issues - no cold starting problems - no high idles - no running rich - no hot running problems - no problems in traffic - no "needs a a bit more tuning" - no sacrificing of any of the creature comforts - no excuses - i mean done like it rolled off the showroom floor as any production car does

having turbocharged my fair share of cars, i know the ups and downs of doing something like that, and i'm certainly not poo-pooing the concept - i just wonder if anybody has actually succeeded in doing it on a reliable daily driver

again, don't even bother with a car that is "in process" or "will work" or "almost done" or a race car, or anything other than a 100% perfect running 3 liter full featured street car

this thread is not about shops who do turbos - this thread is not about turbocharged cars that don't fit the bill - this thread is not about how much power one can get from a turbo - this thread is not about what somebody thinks about this turbo or that

this thread has been returned to the original question - this is NOT a discussion thread - please feel free to start your own discussion thread about any turbo conversation you want to have - that's great - this is merely a survey to see if anybody knows of a car THAT IS ALREADY DONE that is a 3.0 turbocharged street car that runs at least as reliably and normally as the 951 - please do not pop in with your own side commentary - start a new thread for that

if you know of such a car, please post a link to it, or some reference to it so we can check it out

My 86 951 runs great. 450 ft-lbs at the wheels. AC, everything. Its a Phoenix car too. 115 degree summers with no issues. All need to be perfecct is a paint job, which isnt real bad, just not perfect. The 968 is in the works for this year. May go a different direction slightly for the 968. May end up sleeving it to a 3.1, it closes up the deck, among other benefits. Real big power is attainable(700 RWHP+) problem is, lots of lag cause youll need a huge turbo. Not very streetable, if the power doesnt even start kicking in til 4500 rpm. The other problem is the transaxle. My 951 is tuned in the 4-500 RWHP range, the 968 Ill be shooting for 5-600 RWHP range(6 speed is stronger).

Heres another shot after the suspension upgrade, KW v3 all around, sway bars, etc. Only difference you can see in the pic is the tops of the strut tower "hats" are painted red. Needed a detail in this pic, and a new air filter, pics are from last summer.

apples and oranges between a 951 and a 968 - not even close to the same

good luck getting anywhere near that power - i've never heard of anybody crossing the 500 line

let's stay focused on the 968, and not get into 951 discussions - there are other boards for that

Apples and oranges? Its essentially a 968 ts replica engine. Its an s2 block(with piston squirters) 2.7 944 NA head, mahle pistons(oem yep, porsche sourced em), 951 cam/housing, etc. Indeed a "3 liter street car that has ZERO issues" is it not? Almost down to the T how porsche did the 968 ts, bolt ons excluded. The 968 turbo s was essentially 944/68 parts bin engine.Only thing not identical to OEM 968 ts, is the block. Its an S2 block, but the only difference between a 68 block and a s2 block is piston squirters(and the numbers stamped on the block), call up Mr. Lindsey voila piston squirters(of course after waiting for shipping). You wanna know how to have a reliable 3.0 turbo? Slap on a 944 top end, exhaust, intake, etc on it. Just like porsche did. Want more power, than 305 BHP? Call vitesse. Ill be building almost the same engine in the 968 coupe. How is it apples and oranges? Porsche says they changed 80% but I dont see it. Biggest differences between an S2 and 68, is the chassis/body and 01e(6 speed). Very subtle changes really. The 968 is a bit more refined, thats why I own one. The 968 ts was definitely not 80% new/different.

Never past 500? Seen it. Want dyno slips? Actually know of more than that on a 2.5. Im already in the 400's personally, and could tune for quite a bit more. My goals were for low end TQ more than HP. Hence why I went with the 8 valve over the 16. Same as porsche did. The 16v will put out more peak horsepower, but the 8v is a broader curve, and puts out way more torque. Thus more streetable.
