Quick Air box mod question
#1

Well, I'm gonna do it and order trim rings, etc and a K&N filter. One question though:

What is the best size hole to drill 2 in or "2.125" (2 1/8). I have seen both in instructions. My concern is that the trim rings will fit properly.

Thanks!!

whichever size fits your rings is fine - the idea is to have it a snug fit - just measure the ring, and use that size hole saw

the reason there are 2 hole sizes mentioned is because we have had 2 different ring sizes, due purely to availability

I was going to go out and buy a hole saw while waiting for order (local hardware joint going out of business) - I will be ordering rings from 968 Engineering. Do you know what size they sell, or is it whatever is available to them?

Thanks again.

i bought trim rings from 968 engineering. they were 2.125". i bought a 2.125" hole saw & arbor. the trim rings fit so snug that i didn't need to apply any glue. i recommend you also buy the airbox retention system from 968engineering, as its one hell of a pain getting the box back in once its removed(unless you have the retention system which makes it easy to remove/install).

Yeah, but I was thinking the other day, driving around: maybe the amount of time you spend trying to jam the retention system into the car equals or betters the cumulative amount of time that would go into dealing with an unmodified car's mounting system over its life (unless you're Flash and are in there every week).

well, if you are modifying the airbox, you are going to pull it out. and its easier to get it back in with the retention system. i didnt have much trouble getting the retention system in. the stock mounting system would have been a pain though.

Call me crazy, but I don't find the stock mounting system to be all that bad. Yes, it's a bit more difficult, but not a huge deal. I just push the rubber mount down on the hole and work around it with my finger until it slides into place. I suppose a bit of soapy water would make it even easier. Maybe it costs me 2 extra minutes of mild tedium?

i remove my airbox about twice a month for cleaning and such - the stock system doesn't work very well for that - it's fine if you just leave it there, but the new parts are a lot better, and very inexpensive

All the trim rings I've received have been 2 1/8"Even with that size hole saw I use the dremel quite a bit to make fit . I also cut down some of the vertical ribs so the trim rings fit flush.

I got an email back from 968 Engineering: 2 1/8 is the current size. Seeing as I am a professional trombonist, and therefore widely recognized in the musical world as lacking higher cognitive functions , it took me a while to figure out what 2.125 inches was, exactly. Seems to be a hybrid measurement system!

I used the 2.125" hole saw and it was still a tight fit for the rings.
