did the air box mod
#61

Well, I have now joined the Air Box Mod group. I had to use "bass bin tubes" to tidy it up and because the flanges are a bit wider than those I've seen on the site, the spacings aren't exactly the same as in the pdf diagram. I hope this isn't going to matter too much? Not enough daylight left for full reassembly, so I'm gonna have to wait until tomorrow before I can play.

Still, a full day of fun ahead.

God I love this site

Spacing it not the issue, hole size is so you should be good to go.

with four crutchfield ports = additional ~11.5sqin to prefilter intake

3 inch intake hose ~7sqin.

certainly should be able to increase pre-filter atmospheric pressure. But having any filter produces significant turbulance which needs to move towards laminar by the time it reaches the port.

How much post filter flow increase or pressure increase is realized?

Car came with a large cone filter on the end of the 3 inch intake hose and I replaced this with a recently purchased stock airbox... and have not noticed any real power change... I am sure it has decreased slightly but I can't feel it...

I guess I just am not ready to drill my filter box....

i would have to go back and dig up the manometer readings, but it was significant

suffice it to say that it was enough to produce 10.8hp when in conjunction with a k&n filter, and a little more than half of that with a stock filter

that's impressive for 30$!

1500$ on an exhaust might get you that......

Well, did I notice a difference with the mod?

You know I really can't tell, but as it's just such fun to drive I really don't care!

And if the car is brething better now, then than has to be a good thing.

yeah - it's not a night and day thing to be sure - noticeable, if you are sensitive, but pretty much right at the limits of most people's ability to feel things like that

it will also be a touch less on an engine with lower compression, common in higher mileage cars

I noticed a big change in the sound of the intake.

Flash. Read your article. Convinced me with all those zeros...

did the mod today. Have to wait overnight for the industrial plastic glue to set up. recessed the ports a little deeper by triminning the plastic ribs on front of box. Also trimmed edge of port so they fit nicely. Total length of port is 12mm.

2 inch ports on ebay were here in 3 days. ~2$ each plus ~7$ shipping. Had the glue laying around. It is a polyuethane glue. great for plactics, metals, wood. Just have to wait 24 hours for the cure.

ive been kinda bored so i decided to make some of those velocity stacks, this is what i have so far. it sits 1/4'' into the air box, the funnel is 2'' at the base and 3'' at the widest point of the funnel, it filleted (rounded) on all corners, so no corners are sharp. im going to cut some out of wood just as a proto type, ill post some pictures of those once they are done.

Joel: Looks like they will stick out in front of the box by about 3-4 inches. Length intruding into space in front of airbox may cause some turbulence in filling of the chamber in front of them. and they may not be as efficient as a result. Will look good though!

As a follow-up to my porting: I actually (no lie, you can really feel a difference in my car) did notice a slight power improvement after the mod. But only when the variocam comes on. Power band was kind of flat before. Now You can actually feel the front end lift with 2nd through 4th shifts above 3000 rpm. (Probably, more air works better with the power chip installed by PO)

Not really and significant sound change from the front though.

Thought I'd add my experiences for what it's worth. Did the airbox mod (although just limited to two holes) about 3 months ago. The limit to two holes was due to not knowing how loud the intake noise was going to be. Have to say I was impressed with the apparent extra bhp and the resultant noise. Just fitted the modified subwoofer ports (curved type and flush with the inside of the box) and it feels even better. Never would of though such a small mod would make such a difference. Now I guess I'll go the whole hog and drill the other two holes. Mine is running with a stock filter - guess it's time to replace that too with a K&N although my regular Porsche mechanic reckons I won't see any improvement.

did you show the mechanic the article? we tested it, and the k&n nearly doubles the output over the stock filter when used with the full mod

Is there a stat on the forum for most views? This one has something like 1200.

Did you guys replace the elbow joint that directs air into the box, or make it "ram air" and leave it off? Got my holes cut!!!

No I haven't, but I seem to remember him refering to the over oiling issue (MAF problems) as well. I've read your comments on that and have confidently placed my order for the K & N!

I clean my MAF with CRC MAF cleaner about a week after I reoil my K&N.

the "snorkel" is removed entirely in the mod

on the subject of oiling the K&N, i just recently found out that others are getting squeeze bottles of the oil in their kits - i had never seen this - i have always had an aerosol can - now, i understand how it is so easy and confusing for people to oil these things

here is the solution:

do not apply the oil directly from the squeeze bottle - get yourself a spray bottle - that empty windex bottle should do the trick - put the oil in there and then spray it lightly onto the filter

problem solved
