CAB ROLL BAR

by the way, the boxster has an even bigger clearance problem, and a weaker design, and they get to go out in all PCA DE events i've heard of so far, so this one should be a no brainer

It isn't fair, but the Boxster gets a pass without the yard-stick test. The statement given to me is "If Porsche says it is good enough, we accept that. But if it is an after-market unit, we have to go by the rules."

Anyway, I figure this is going to be the tallest "chassis support" that I can have in my car and still operate the top. So if I can't pass the yard-stick test, I will have to work on lowering my butt!

that's kind of how i had to look at it too - i definitely plan on getting it out on the track - that's why i bilt it in the first place - i am planning on taking it to willow springs very soon - i know most DE events are fine with it with no questions

Bob, can you confirm that there is just a little air between Ron's helmet and the level?

Looks to me like you can get your fingers between the level and helmet. I think he said the roll bar can't go any higher without effecting the top locking into place.

I don't know what the PCA rules are, but notice that the level runs parellel to the edge of the car directly over the driver. If the level had run between the center of the front window, and over the bars crown, there would be a larger gap.

the level is there for relative guaging only, and is not in any way to indicate any specific clearance

my seats are VERY different than stock, so any specific clearance between the helmet and the level is moot

the chassis brace is as tall as it can be made - it is intended to satisfy DE requirements - it is not intended to do anything more - the cabriolet may never qualify for racing, based on your particular height, and that the top must be in the up position, and the geometrical complications that presents

this is as good as it gets with any unit - if you're 6' tall, and you want to race, buy a hardtop

the deadline for the first batch ordering is 5pm pacific time tomorrow - the next batch will likely not be for months

I just got off the phone with Scott - my order is placed, now it's just some more anticipation. We talked about the installation procedure - it sounds like it could not be easier. Again, WELL DONE!!!

lol - thanks - yeah - pretty simple - he and i have had that thing in and out a number of times now - takes minutes - you spend more time freaking out about watching every little surface of the car and interior making sure you don't nick anything, than you do actually installing it

it's not perfect, but this is as good as it can get in this car - i wish it could have been taller, but it just it's just not possible - it works fine for me though

just a note - if anybody is considering using the windscreen, you need the street sport version, or the race spec version, even if you don't add the harness bar, or x cross brace - the mounting points for the windscreeen are not on the base model (it was a cost thing) and it will be a real expensive pain for you to add them later

I ordered the full set. Sounds like it is close to the minimum order needed.

I called Scott yesterday, and had the honor of being the First person to order! It was well after lunch, so I was surprised to be the first.

I really enjoyed talking to him. I am anxious for him to get his website working so I can see the other stuff he does.

Even though I don't plan on doing anything more than DE's I went for the full version (minus the X-cross bar that can be bought and installed later.)

What about a group buy on windscreen?? Anyone interested in that?

Thanks again Flash for all the work you put into this.

bruce - humerous curiosity - how many times did you pick up and put down the phone before you ordered?

scott - yeah, i was a bit surprised myself that there weren't calls backed up over the weekend

yes, we are very close, if not already there - once we go with this though, all orders beyond wednesday will wait until the second batch, and i have no idea how long that will be - he has a lot of other projects coming up after this one that will need to be done before he can get back to making more of these - it won't be soon, that's for sure - this is not somthing that will be sitting around the shop waiting to be sold - they are made to order, and in batches only

one more day and the bending begins

I have been traveling since last Friday. Yesterday was the first time I had a chance to call. Somehow I avoided making any prank calls before ordering.

bruce - i think you'll be happy when you see it - we did the best we could possibly do within the design and fitment limitations - beyond that, a special one of a kind unit of your own would have to be installed

pretty sure we have the number we needed to do a batch, so in less than 8 hours (5pm Pacific time today), we will cut of the orders and proceed with the fabrication

after that, all bets are off on price and schedule (i broke my crystal ball)

whew - finally

I ordered mine yesterday - thank god I checked my e-mail Tue after a long business trip! I went for the street-sport version, which should be perfect for adding a simple cross-element and mounting my camera on it. As for the clearance, Bob did the best he could for cabs and I hope it is O'k for DE. If I were going all out racing, I would want a hard top and a roll-cage anyway.

Bob, thanks for getting this project into production. I can only imagine how much design and commute time it took you.

lol - yeah, the commute time sucked - sometimes it took as much as 2.5 hours to get back from there - i made about a dozen round trips

the harness bar will make for a nice camera mount - it's also the standard 1.5" O.D. - that's where i plan to mount mine - it gives you the added benefit of more structural rigidity too

by the way - we definitely have enough for the batch - so, we are going into production tomorrow and 5pm Pacific time today is the cutoff for orders for this batch

thanks to everybody who jumped in - i hope to see and hear from many of you who get out there for DE events

OK, now you've got me thinking. I've ordered the street/sport with the windscreen kit. Can I purchase and add the harness bar at a later time?
Partial Post: Please Login or Register to read the full post.

short answer is yes - long answer is, i have no idea how long it will for them to get to it (see broken crystal ball above) - it is entirely dependent on the same complications of the second batch thing - to get the pricing, it has to go in with a batch - otherwise, it would be more expensive to do as a one-off
