Windshield Replacement
#21

I just had my cab windshield replaced two weeks ago courtesy of a rock that caused a crack. Windows are the same for the 944 and 968 cab. It is a dealer only item, no after market replacement available. Price? Are you sitting down? $637 plus installation. Right after having it done, I called my insurance agent and had my deductible on my comprehensive lowered from $500 to $250 so it won't hurt as much next time.

you could probably have saved about $200 if you had gotten it from sunset (even after shipping). they always seem to have amazing prices on those. when i changed mine last year, it was about $600 installed.

Good to know, and thanks for the info. After my first repair on my first 944 12 years ago, I *always* sit down before I even ask prices.

Might have saved State Farm $200, but with my $500 deductible, it wouldn't have made a difference to me. I'm just shocked that they can ship a window from Oregon cheaper than a locally available one!

yeah - i was pretty stunned too. it works out though most of the time.

i work it a bit differently with my insurance. i have the approved shop write it up and send it over. i then hire the shop and pay for it myself. i then have the insurance company pay me. this gives me the chance to get it done my way, rather than what the insurance company wants. it's a lot more hassle and time consuming, but i generally get better work.

Your lucky you didn't get it up here from a P dealer. My insurance paid 1100.00 for the glass plus installation! Good thing i had 200.00 deductible.

I picked the glass installer, one recommended by my Porsche shop, cleared it with the insurance company, and paid the deductable directly to the glass place. Real nice people. Done while I waited. No problems. Love the new window!

My windshield has to be replaced and I am being told by all the shops I've called that the 968 is a dealer only replacement. Has anyone else run into this? I am in Atlanta, but even if the glass had to be bought at the dealer, would replacing be so difficult they would turn down the work?

I know mine was a PITA according my glass guy, others have had no problem. The glued on front fenders caused a lot of grief when he was trying to access the window molding on the bottom corners.

I'm in atlanta too and will need a new windshield soon. My plan had been t.o order one from Sunset and have someone local put it in. Have not done anything about it yet though. Let me know what you work out.

Like in all areas of life, there are people that are OK at what they do and there are people that are GREAT at what they do!

Snoop around on the web, ask at dealers and car lots and you will find someone locally that is GREAT at replacing ANY kind of windshield...

My indy recommended one, but he didn't want to do it. I found a website that said molding might have to be replaced, which may be the reason they don't want to tackle it. I had the same problem trying to find someone to put the rear glass in my older 911. I finally took it to Auto Atlanta....should have gone to dealer for all the success I had there, but they did OK with the glass. This may be one of the times I break down and go to dealer. There are two in Atlanta. I know one is much easier to deal with that the other, so I'll probably go to the new one. MY AM radio that the PO installed has never worked in the car. That probably has something to do with the antenna in the windshield. If I do this and a top, I'll basically have a new car, other than the normal chipped paint on the front and along the sides. IF the clutch wasn't so stiff I'd make it my DD, but 35 miles down I85 everyday and I'd need a knee replacement before long.

Having had this done last month, (and buying the glass from the dealer for $637), I'd be curious to know how much Sunset charges. My glass guy had no problem, but I was told that I had to bring it in, they couldn't do it mobile because it had to be done on level ground. It came out fine.

Just got a crack yesterday, driving on I95 southbound into Philadelphia. A semi kicked up a stone and it hit just under the wiper arm, ricocheting down and right to the bottom edge of the windshield. I had thought I was OK, because initially I did not see a mark, but it was too low to notice from the driver's seat. Price from Sunset was still as Flash quoted, above, $562 for the coupe and about $150 to ship to Cranbury, NJ. I really wanted to replace my shot a/c compressor, but that will have to wait as the crack snakes it's way right up the middle of the glass, now about the length of a dollar bill. Rats!

I had mine (coupe) replaced about a year ago. Had to get it imported from Germany, only options were clear with antenna and green tint with antenna. I believe, as earlier stated, these are 944 originals. Luckily my insurance covered the total cost, unluckily the fitters made a pigs ear of the job. Apparantly it's a tricky job, but I was pissed as this is their profession, I don't make excuses in mine! Got a stone chip 6 months ago so just got that fixed rather than go through the hassle of another screen.

I have a new windshield inbound now from Sunset. I have a highly recommended independent mobile guy lined up to put it in. I do not know if he has any 968 or 944 experience. I assume not. Can anyone who has had this done comment on what the issues are for the installer??? Can't hurt to give him a heads up on known issues.

removal of the old windshield can result in scratching the paint, especially down at the corners (ask me how i know).

the mirror button may become an issue, as we do not use a standard one.

the antenna ribbon cable on the cab windshield is EXTREMELY fragile. take care not to let it get kinked or torn during installation.

because this windshield is essentially glued in, you cannot drive far after installation for 24 hours or it will pop loose. it is best to let it sit overnight without driving at all.
