Windshield Replacement
#41

Thanks for the summary. I'll keep that in mind when I do my install. Crack is now 2 inches longer, and doing a left turn. Projected path takes it right through the center of my field of vision, just as Murphy would predict.

You might also want to remove the A-pillar trim pieces before the windshield install. One of mine has a nice mashed-in area up near the top where, I presume, a windshield installer hired by a previous owner hit it good with tool or something.
Just got a crack yesterday, driving on I95 southbound into Philadelphia. A semi kicked up a stone and it hit just under the wiper arm, ricocheting down and right to the bottom edge of the windshield. I had thought I was OK, because initially I did not see a mark, but it was too low to notice from the driver's seat. Price from Sunset was still as Flash quoted, above, $562 for the coupe and about $150 to ship to Cranbury, NJ. I really wanted to replace my shot a/c compressor, but that will have to wait as the crack snakes it's way right up the middle of the glass, now about the length of a dollar bill. Rats!
I think i can get you a windshield for around that price, free ship no tax. I also have an installer, who did mine for $200. PM if interested.

I think about $650. My wacko windshild story is about 5 years ago I flew from Ca to NJ to buy a Mariner Blue Cab. The seller had neglected to tell me the windshild was cracked preventing the car from being driven home. With my connections I tried to find a windshile within 500 miles (that was my risk limit). No dice. During the research I determined that there were only two cab windshields in the USA. At the time there were only a handful or so in Germany. I did not buy that car but did buy one of the windshields. had it shipped to Partsheaven to store for me. I had 5 Cabs and a coupe at the time. Partsheaven stored it for about 5 years. I got down to 2 Cabs and lowered the risk so sold the windshield for the $450 I had paid for it. Two weeks later I lost a windshield and mine was gone. $650 and a two week wait.

Unless you're in an accident, windshield damage is covered under the comprehensive part of your insurance as opposed to the collision coverage part. You can have separate deductibles ( most policies do ) and the comprehensive deductible can be lowered to ridiculously low levels for just a negligible increase in premium. My collision deductible is $ 1 K , but my comprehensive deductible is only $ 50. The additional premium to lower the comprehensive deductible from $ 500 to $ 50 was...a mere $20 a year ! I was shocked..pleasantly shocked :-) . So a no-brainer since my 944 before it and my 968 windshields seem to have a magnet for stones on the highway. I've gone trough 3 windshields so far with the 968 . My out of pocket cost : $ 50 a piece. ( oh yeah, plus the extra

$ 20 a year. LOL ) So I don't care what a new windshield costs..only how quickly it's available. Two years ago I had no problem getting one from Porsche but I have a coupe so maybe they're more available than cab ones.. Or maybe not any more.. I hope I don't have to find out the hard way

You could insert just about anything after that statement and it would reflect my experience with 968 sellers in the NorthEast. I don't know how it is with other areas of the country. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

I drove all over the NorthEast to look at cars in "excellent condition" only to find a bunch of beat up cars and excuses. The classic is "Well, for it's age,..."
