Windshield sticker removal for reinstallation
#1

The windshield in my Cab has been removed by the body shop to repair damage to the windshield frame in a recent accident (described elsewhere in the repair forum). It cracked during removal, which is common I understand. Sad part is that this car (originally sold by Brumos in Florida) has a numbered windshield sticker attesting to having been driven and OK'd by Hurley Haywood. The body shop and their glass guy says they can't remove the sticker and reinstall in on the new wind shield. So I guess it's up to me.

I've seen youtube videos on removing inspection stickers from broken wind shields (torch on outside of glass for a couple seconds then use a new razor). But would like to know what experience you may have had successfully removing stickers intact.

One alternative occurs to me is to get the right glass cutting blade for my Dremel and cut the piece out, polish the edges and mount it in the interior somewhere. But the crack goes behind the sticker, so unlikely to work.

Many Thanks!

Is the sticker paper or plastic? I have had a lot of success with heat and a little Goo Gone under the sticker to release the glue from plastic stickers. It takes time to work its way under the sticker, but if you are patient, Goo Gone can do a lot of things without harming the finish.

in PA when you break a windshield, they used cut out the glass around the inspection sticker - taping the edges to prevent cuts. Then it's kept on the dashboard whew the sticker would go.

At least you would have it preserved and wont' risk ruining it by questionable removal methods. This way you still have it and it won't continue to degrade due to uv exposure and you can choose when and where to display it.

Id be careful with Goo Gone. The solvent in it can also dissolve some paints and inks. The usual test in a small area is kind of problematic here.

I think Id give heat from the backside and a brand new razor blade first. I like these for that kind of work.

Last year I took the year/month stickers of my 55 plate that way and once I had the corner raised, the sticker just pulled right off (very slowly and carefully) with the heat. But then theyd only been in place - year, not a few decades.

Long Shot: Call Brumos and see if theyll do you another. AFAIK: Hurley is still around.

If you still have the sticker there must be a shop who can duplicate this one.

New windshield and new sticker
