What did you do for your 968 this week?

Had a rattle type noise coupled with a belt whine emanating from the sc. off to Max. I the car had a major service in 5/19 and then it sat because of my situation last summer. Hopefully nothing of consequence will be found and I can start driving it.

Yikes !  Let’s hope it’s just the initial waking up from sleep crankiness ; since the SC has a self contained oiling unit, if it’s not used for a long time it may not have retained a sufficient amount of oil in it to start smoothly .   Btw, did you check the SC reservoir fluid level ?

This was the first thing checked. Oil level appropriate.

Wasn't sure where to put this, and thought this had the widest coverage.... I received the pin extractor inserter tool today. I tested it by removing and inserting the hood alarm pins. Once I'd worked the process all was good:

1. Cut the wire.

2. Push extractor in from behind to push the pin out.

3. Pass wire through hole and attach to pin.

4. Push pin back in from the front.

I forgot to include the price ..... GBP17 +pp

Replaced battery and sc seemed to need a belt tightening. This was good news as I thought I was hearing noise emanating from the unit itself. Now I just have to go get it. Four hour drive but well worth it.

That’s good news !   As you may know the pulleys / rollers do have a tendency to go bad after a while and make rattling noises which are hard to differentiate from the SC itself , even with a car stethoscope because of their proximity to the unit and how easily noise travels and transfers so it’s tough to pinpoint .

Today I collected my next project,

A 1986 Honda VF1000F2

I bought this from the spares and repairs section on eBay, not running right,

It has not been serviced since 2003 and only done 3000 miles in the last 17 years, its frame number puts it 100 from the end of the one year run of this particular bike, the frame and engine number match all the original documents

I have checked how many left, and this is one of only 9 machines not on sorn (Statutory Off Road Notice), and there is only 18 sorn, so its a pretty rare machine

The tech specs say that its a 118 BHP and weights in at 245KG, that makes it about 450BHP per tonne

Does the standing 1/4 mile in 11.05 seconds @ 128mph, 0-60 in about 4.0 seconds

Cruising at 80-90 mph it will do 40+ mpg, it needs a lot of tlc but I hope to have it on the road by the end of Sept

The sc now sounds normal. Had me worried for a bit. I had the stethoscope on the sc and it indicated it was coming from there. The belts were tightened and adjusted and now no unusual sound. Somewhat weird because the car has not been driven much for the past two years and had a thorough service done last May by Max. Had to wash it when I got home because of all the birds shit. Now I need a sunny day for a drive!

Got the chance for my 968 to meet one of it's siblings -  for the first time under my ownership.    My black 1992 next to an Iris Blue 94 at a small get-together this morning :

I wish, I think there are just a dozen in France. On my first meeting of the Porsche club they were all astounded the engine was "avant"

Okay, well for your amusement, but if you can resist the jokes .....

So I received these stops and gaiters yesterday in preparation for installing Koni inserts .....

The bump stops don't look right: L=10cm/4"  Diam=5cm/2", others I have seen were far shorter.

Any advice ??

Thanks

Find a Mohel?

Seriously, the ones I installed were like those, and the ones I removed were shorter and in pieces. Everything works fine now.
