What did you do for your 968 this week?

The part numbers are for the heater control rod clips that break and put the heater on full

There is a full troubleshooting guide for the heater on Clarkes garage website,

Your mechanic can use this to fault find, its for a 944 but the system is exactly the same

Quote:Don't forget, the default setting for the hot water control valve behind the distributor is "on", so a disconnected or failed vacuum line will make the valve stay on and the heater core in the cabin will always be hot. Those plastic valves are prone to failure, so that may be a good place to look as well.

This.. I have fixed the failed vacuum line twice now.., latest was vacuum line connection disconnected when I got it back from OPC big service this year.., noted constant heat so knew what to look for..

And that's what this forum is for! Keep an eye on that valve, the glue tends to degrade over time and fail at the worst possible time. I replaced mine with an all-metal unit, which required some minimal changing of hoses. If you change the valve, remember to bleed the air out of the system using the bleeder bolt on the top hose.

+ audi part  for 15€ fits also, slightly thicker inlet, but at least it will be stiffer fit to hose.

Interesting discussion and thanks all for the information, including substitute valves.  I'm now wondering whether to replace mine as preventative maintenance.  I doubt mine functioned at all during it's first 22 years of life as it was in the Middle East, but plastic and rubber do suffer in the heat (one day last week it was over 50C) so I wouldn't be surprised if the valve disintegrated without much warning.  I replaced the hoses around it when I did the water pump and timing/balance belts earlier this year, but didn't think to replace the valve itself.

BTW can anyone tell me why my Cab has a relay in the "rear window" spot?  I thought maybe it is just a spare, but there is a place for a spare relay and there's nothing in it.  So I don't want to remove the "rear window" relay in case it also has some other function.

Still waiting for:

1. Injector rail support bobbins.

2. Pin extractor/insertion tools.

3. Front shocks

We certainly have to become accustomed to a different delivery speed.....

Hi Roboman, i'm also planning to change my shock absorbers.

Which ones did or will you order, as there is not much choice for the fronts.

I'm thinking about the Koni inserts.

J I'm not a racer so just bought standard shocks ...... Bilstein-B6-Stosdampfer-2x-Vorne-fur-Porsche-924-944-968/362995823871?  Euro 330 for the two inc post through ebay.fr, though they come from Germany.

Netopyer - thanks for your experience re the heating valve, time for a change I think!  Re the relay, sure I could swap it out (and hope I try every possible function) but I'm just checking if anyone has actual experience ..... I guess I'm really addressing Cab owners as I'm assuming for Coupes it is the RW-heater.  But thanks anyway, and if I don't get any inside knowledge then as you suggest is just what I shall do.

Have a good weekend y'all  (gracious that comes around quickly at the moment)

Can you post a pic of the relay and the location? I will check my car.

Do the valve, it's easier to do now.

Roboman, you don't have to be a racer for the Koni's.

They are adjustable and only around 30 euro's more, but also easier to install.

that's 30 euro a pair, so totally around 360,00 euro a set

J, too late but thanks anyway. For a change I'm letting the garage do it. I don't have a spring compressor and also I am keen to finish the house decorations so I can enjoy the rest of the Summer.

MCL I'll post the pic tomorrow- thanks.

Worked on the rear brakes yesterday and today. New rotors and pads. What a pain in the you know what. Fronts where so much easier. Hard to get to things when you don't have a lift. Took forever to remove the brake wear  sensor from the connection. gave up on installing new. Impossible to seat it. The set screw on the rotor frozen. (Common problem) so they had to be drilled out. After six hours my old body said STOP. To be continued.

MCL - here it is. The relay is the one with the 17mm socket on it, G3, Rear Window. Sorry to be brief, preparing for a party this evening. Thanks again.

J I hope I've got to you before you possibly order from eBay. I received mine today and they don't appear to be what I ordered. It's late and today was our wedding anniversary so I'm not of a mind to investigate shock absorbers (maybe 30 years ago!) so I'll get back to you shortly.

For B6 on a 968 you need two threaded collars to insert in the tops of your old struts once you have cut the tops off at exactly the correct length, once cut the collars need to be inserted exactly the correct distance and then welded in place

Once this is completed then you need the correct tool to set the torque of the locking nut that fits on the collar

The collars are available from sportwagen.de at about 100 euros posted

If you message me directly I can put you in touch with a fella that does this on an exchange basis

Send him your shocks and the inserts and he will build them for you and ship them back

If you had gone with Koni almost the same applies, except you would need to cut the top off and then drill a precise hole in the base of the strut for the locating bolt for the insert

This is because all 944, 944S2 and 968 front struts from about 1986 on changed from screw on tops to crimped tops

Surgery is required no matter what option, and I bet if you back to your advert it says generic photo

Just to add the only full replacement is genuine Porsche at about £300 a side, and they will be between 10-15 years old off the shelf

Roboman, i already knew.

The pictures are just misleading/placed on a lot of site's.

It shows a complete strut, while you can only get inserts from both Bilstein and Koni.

Hope you still had a nice anniversary, congrats anyway
