What did you do for your 968 this week?

Hi Velocity, the car looks good and the photos made me smile; nice when little moments like that come around!

Today I had my front and rear shocks changed.  The boots and gaiters on the old fronts just dropped away in pieces, and the pistons on the rears could be pulled in and out with ease; safe to say there wasn't much shock absorber action going on.

I'm embarrassed to say I didn't do it myself as I don't have spring compressors, but I did instruct on the Boge/koni insert modifications as the garagiste had no previous experience with inserts .... this is rural France, no offence to the guy as he is a fine professional, there just isn't much call for Koni inserts amongst vignerons.  I can say the insert modification is simple once the strut is on the bench.  The inserts have been well designed for this modification and just pull nicely into place.

Anyway the drive back was a delight, now sits very flat through the bends  Smile

Still waiting  for the fixed belt tensioner pivot arm,  after i found out that the previous owner's mechanics lost the variocam check valve and  this pivot armwas not rotating at all, because of no lubricant, and washer missing.

decided to make it  fixed  by my local  machinist to be bulletproof

also, decided to replace my  power steering return line-cooler with new,  alluminium made one.

Removed after market stereo and harness, and installed CR-210 stereo using ISO harnesses. Fixed illumination of clock by tapping into running gray wire from ash trash.  Gray wire was missing for some reason that was supposed to be going to the clock bulb.  Also split this same illumination wire to get illumination to the CR-210.   Discovered RR speaker is blown.  Lol.  Murphy's law. Add speaker to list parts.

Replaced plastic hinge the houses the driver side sunroof lever.

Fixed annoying squeaks in dash due to missing piping.

Fixed annoying squeaks in sunroof due to slight misalignment and rubbing of sunroof panel on body opening.

Rewired rear hatch harness with two diodes to support 944 rear hatch motors instead of 968 motors.

Installed new microswitch in rear hatch.

Replace a couple missing body bolts on underside engine cover.

Installed a bottle motor oil cleaner additive to see if it helps with valve tapping.

Drained coolant in prep for replacing thermostat, replacing heater valve controller, throttle body cleaning, and stock tempswitch with 85 C version.  Seems that I'll need to pull radiator in order to get to the thermostat snap ring due to the angle required to get my long nosed angled snap ring pilers.  piler handles hit the radiator and fan. errr...

Replaced cracked interior temp sensor trim "circular grill" shaped

What is the color?  Amethyst Metallic?

I a have done absolutely nothing to my "mistress". Have not driven her a lot the last 10 months. Covid to blame. I did replace the battery though, it was 8 years old. Did not realize how hard it was to get to the fastener on the the bottom of the battery bay.. Not sure I need to do anything this spring for for the 26 year old girl.

No kidding !   You’d think such a simple thing would be a cinch .  It’s a total PITA .  :whine:

I finally got around to fixing the seat belts. They have had a half a turn twist in both of them since the car was built. The fix wasn't nearly as difficult as I thought it was going to be. Now when you wear them they lay flat against your body and they don't bind. It's amazing how something so simple changes your impression of the car when you put on the seat belt.

I got to visit my car yesterday and run it for 30 minutes. Looks so forlorn residing in a garage so far from home! Of course it looks a damn site better than the incinerated one sitting in a gutted garage.

not the best design. Had to use a deep 15mm socket IIRC and an extension

-cleaned Throttle Body

-clean various electrical connectors and mass flow sensors

-gave cooling system an enema (aka coolant cleaner w/ flush). 3rd time was the charm, finally the blockage broke free and entire system is running cool.  Continuing to clean it more until everything looks clear.

-replaced battery which would only show failure under load.   This was a long PITA, finally solved.

-checked thermostat

-replaced heater control valve with metal unit from Napa.  Napa unit has a smaller vacuum nipple then the Porsche OEM part. Beware that you will need a smaller inner diameter tube to fit on this nipple and then its outer diameter to into the Porsche vacuum line.

starting to see light at the end of the tunnel after 2 years of replace and repair. Smile

Fog light fuse blew. Now it's time to  disassemble the lights to find out what the problem is. Did replace the bulbs a couple a months ago. Maybe something went wrong here. Always something with these old girls...but we love them!!!

Snova you're cooking up a storm, good man!! Is that metal heater valve a substitute from another vehicle or an after market Porsche design? I recall a thread indicating the failure of the valve can be a real nuisance (as no coolant can sometimes be!) and that there's a better one on the market from Volvo or some such. Obviously I cannot pop over to Napa, but if it's from another car ....

Bon weekend à tous Smile

I believe it is a Volvo part ( 90% certain ) .

Yes, “brilliant“ Porsche engineering, to place a plastic HCV very close to the hottest part of the engine.  Rolleyes

But 115 K miles on one car and 125 K on the other , and neither plastic HCV failed m so maybe it’s just luck for me ..

edit :   Correction :   Audi  metal HCV.   (  Volvo is the MAF  )

Thanks DS, it seems like the sort of small item I would put on my shelf .... along with a bit of rubber hose in the glove box to bypass the valve if it starts to leak. (I already carry a spare DMF relay). It's not a matter of carrying a full toolkit and spares department around all the time, small items and a few tools as a "just in case".

Snova does that HCV have a part no. Stamped on it? Thanks.

Happy birthday Jay .... many thanks for keeping the forum rolling along!

A spare DMF relay in the trunk or glove compartment is essential !   Small box of a few assorted fuses also.   That’s all the spare parts I keep in my car .

So, the break the (mostly) silence, I have attached below my annual 2020 driving record, which I have done yearly for a long time.  In 2020 I had no Porsches so the driving is confined to various Fords.(There is no comparison!).

2020 Ford Escape hybrid - 90,422 km (56,185 miles), 40.53 US MPG.

2018 Ford Focus - 9,212 km (5,724 miles), 37.74 US MPG

Down a bit from past years due to slow times in March-May.
