What did you do for your 968 this week?

Gradually getting through it ....

I ordered and swapped out the injector plugs, knock sensor plugs, and the cam lifter plug.

I've ordered and am awaiting the 3-pin plugs for the crank sensor, and a couple of spares.

I've ordered and am awaiting the 7-pin plugs for the MAF.

The rubber covers on all these are coming apart as shrapnel, brittle as anything.

Changed the O-rings on the oil-air separator, and ring/bung on the dipstick to block.... thanks for the heads up Waylander.

After trying fairly unsuccessfully to clean the pins on the various sensors with a small flat screwdriver I found a great way to do a much better job ..... the plug/socket/sleeve units I ordered come with metal pin-sockets, so I sprayed WD40 onto the sensor pins and then slide these replacement pin/sockets up and down to remove all the gunge; works a treat.

I also ordered a heap of those yellow cable clips as they too are brittle and falling to bits.

Eventually I shall get to doing the job which started all this .... installing the booster.

Its just amazing that while your in there list just keeps growing and growing

Well worth replacing all those connectors, it will save you pain later thats for sure

Those clips are called Omega Clips, I bought a massive bag of 500 off the bay years ago, cost me about £5 ish, still got loads

Dont forget that image I posted with all the clip and tie part numbers on, that may help

Changed out the alternator/starter harness ... will post on the other thread (alternator not charging) but can say it was an easy job on LHD, I cannot comment on RHD cars.

Taking the weekend off, it's pretty tiring to my old body leaning in to do stuff, then underneath to do stuff .... repeat ad infinitum Sad

Good to have the "chief inspector" around to ensure I stay on track ....

Drove it to La Rochelle for new belts and water pump. They told me it would be best to replace the belt tensioner........... Of course, there aren't any! Lets just hope when they get in there it's in reasonable condition.

The tensioner is not mentioned in the manual as a service item, no idea why you would need to change it

Mine has done 170k and still works fine

Now the tensioner arm and locating pin, might need inspection and possibly replacing, the pins are known to snap off, if dry and corroded

The tensioner , it wil go a long time , it is a hydraulic device and has a seal ,it is bolted to the engine , so it wil see some heat ,  25+ years old , i replaced mine 2 years a go .

And it is not mentioned in the service manual !!, neither are variocam pads and chain , but they do fail , if not replaced in time .

Other hand , i haven not seen a failed tensioner

They did advise to replace , the P dealer mechanic did ,when needing belt change , and there is no historie of replacement before  , friend of mine asked when they serviced his 968 couple years ago .

Just for info, I contacted the maker of the tensioner direct, Aisin Europe

They in turn spoke to the maker in Japan, the original castings and drawings and all that were binned back in 1996, Porsche ordered an initial run of parts for the cars they thought they would sell in 93/94, they never ordered any more as sales were so slow

The parts that have been sold by dealers have been on the shelf since 1990

I think it's been a good week.  In addition to replacing the booster, brake MC and clutch MC, I hope I have headed off some problems down the road be replacing a plethora of plugs and sleeves and vacuum hose.  From memory, 4 x injector plugs, 2 x knock sensor plugs, cam lifter plug, 1 x flywheel rotation sensor plug, MAF plugs, assorted vacuum lines, half a dozen omega clips and the clutch MC to fluid tank hose.  I cannot find the sleeve for the 7-pin MAF plug - any suggestions for a replacement?

I also frightened myself stupid (maybe I should alter the punctuation on that) .... my wife bought me a bore camera, great little device which I've used many times, so I thought I check inside the inlet ports to see what I could see.  Unfortunately I saw something I didn't like the look of and didn't know what to do about; in the bore of pot 2 I could see a lump and thought something had fallen past the open valve whilst removing the manifold.... only a slight panic at this point.

Anyway, so I took photos and sent them to Waylander and Jack .... back came the reply from both ..... "it's the tip of the spark plug", like I said, scared myself stupid Sad  Sad  Sad

Anyway, all good, and the engine was up and running smoothly yesterday.]

The 7 pin plug and sleeve can be purchased from Porsche

And brave to admit your panic, I did allow myself a good chuckle

Finally managed to bleed the clutch, what a PITA job. The geometry of my garage, slightly sloping floor, seemed to mitigate against just jacking it up .... front up seemed to let air into the reservoir, rear up and I couldn't reach the bleed nipple. I decided to loosen off the slave and make the bleed nipple the highest point. Instant progress in terms of getting air out of the pipes, but what a wrestling match getting the slave off. Nice casing design blocking wrench access; I assume there's some sort of special tool. Anyway, perseverance paid off and the clutch is now smooth.

It's much better as a 2 person job...one bleeding, and the other on the pedal.

Today I replaced the display of my Blaupunkt Symphony.  Found a Blaupunkt Atlanta with a good working display, which I switched with the one in the Symphony.

A bit stressy, since I did not find any information how to disassemble these models.  At the end was not that difficult, just finding the right clicks to push and make sure no plastic breaks.

Last week I sent back the SS flexible brake-lines that would fit if I pulled hard on my rigid lines. It's not appropriate that the supplier (not Stuart) tells me to stress my brake lines to compensate for a shorter joining piece. Then I contacted the main dealer to explain with examples how their site wasn't working... their response was to give me an alternative department address to which I should send the information. And there is some reason I should do their work for them!? Sad

Anyway, so now I'm awaiting photos of the items from another company before I place the order.
