At last!!  Exchanged the brake lines for stainless-steel ones.  I looked at my brake booster posts, it's been two months since I said I was going to do that work.  I guess not needing a 968 daily driver puts it down the priority list.  Anyway, job done, test drive was very positive, I'll finish up the post on the brake booster theme.

Drove it to work today to put it trough its paces before I take it for the smog test tomorrow.   It'll also give me a chance to fill it up with some fresh Chevron gas .    Happy to report that it's purring like a kitten.  Well, a cheetah more like it.. I forgot how fast this car is with the supercharger in there  B)

But it's not all good  ; the first  10 miles or so of highway driving the chassis was vibrating quite a bit , and then it smoothed out entirely to its usual ride quality.   I have little doubt it must have been the tires flat spots, after the car sat in the same spot in the garage for an eternity...until they had a chance to work themselves out after a bit of a drive..    And the roof lifts up ok, but when coming down it doesn't close all the way, it stops about 1/2"  short .  My first thought was that the gears got stripped, but it was working fine the last time it was driven, and never used since,  ( about two years ) , so that makes no sense.. maybe it needs some silicon  lubricant sprayed in there, to hopefully loosen up whatever makes it stick at that travel point ?  Huh

“next day” edit :  I don’t know how this can be explained , but I tried it again this morning ; no luck at all on the first try, so not sure what possessed me to attempt that again ; the second try was the same, and then when I told myself this one coming up is is the last chance I’m going to give it, it worked perfectly fine, just as it should !  I’m just going to leave it alone, I never take the roof off anyway  ( did it a couple of times and didn’t like driving that targa style convertible at all ! ) and I never tilt the roof up because when it’s warm outside I have the AC in at all times, so there it is : gear-stripping prevention    Tongue

Did a full wash/detail job on Saturday for a Sunday morning Cars & Coffee event.   Found a couple of interesting items :

I pulled the front black plastic engine bay cover (present on earlier models, has the "glove compartment") and discovered the air intake box (where air filter resides) was completely loose - some previous mechanic (I'm guessing when I had belts done) didn't put screws back in place, or didn't do it right.   The rubber "stands" on either side of intake box were out of their mounts, the bolt on the front bracket was missing completely, both screws that hold the air intake manifold to the air cleaner box were out, with the manifold flopping around loose as well :

I managed to find one of the two screws nearby - the other screw and bolt (for bracket to hold air cleaner box) was nowhere to be found.    I managed to find a replacement bolt in my parts supply and after a few choice words, got the whole assembly put back together.   Think I just solved some of the front-end clunking noise I'd noticed.  ;-)

After that adventure was complete, I decided to check out the headlights as long as I was "in that far" (famous last words).  Turns out one of the headlight "retaining ring" was broken and flopping around loose, so I removed what was left of that.

Also noticed (for first time) that the opposite headlight was also entirely missing the headlight retaining ring.    Looking under that headlight I found a significant collection of pine needles, leaves, dirt, and other debris.  Cleaned all of that out of the body under the headlight.

So --- what exactly IS the purpose of the "headlight retaining ring"?   Does it just provide a better seal for the headlight when it's lowered (thus the volume of debris on the side that was missing), or is it "structurally important" to the headlight assembly as a whole?    I'll eventually get them replaced, but curious how urgent a repair this is?

After a 7 month storage hiatus I took my 968 out for a spin yesterday. Beautiful hot sunny day. Car drove like a champ. I forgot what the sc felt like. Nice and quick. I was trying to burn through some gas so I could put some fresh gas in. When I took the cap off to fill it it sounded like a jet engine. Now I’ve heard lower sounding incidents like this before. This though was really loud and at least a minute long. This was somewhat  unnerving. Mind you I’m sensitive to explosions and fire and of course this is immediately what came to mind. But I was outside and safe next to gas pumps!

Impressive! That means that your system is still sealed and without any various air or vacuum leaks.

Very impressive indeed, but I don't think this is an OK sound.

I think somewhere your filler cap is closing to good, looks like something might be blocked.

Interestingly enough I really can’t don’t fill this car up because of the gas smell. It’s been looked at numerous times to no avail. This is the first time I’ve heard this sound and certainly it never lasted that long. Car drove great no leaks on the floor. Unfortunately I had to use race ramps to get it out of the driveway and they don’t work as well as on back of a trailer.

You really need to figure out if it was positive or negative pressure in the tank,

I have seen a tank sucked flat in a 968

After sitting for two years, when I opened the gas cap to fill up the tank there was no sound whatsoever.   FWIW , the tank was half full at the time.

This was after a 90 minute run on a hot day. How does one figure out positive or negative pressure?

Ah, yes after runs like that I recall hearing a whoosh sound when removing the gas cap, but it’s not unusually loud, and doesn’t last more than 1 , maybe 2 seconds at the most ..

If the tank sucked in air then negative, you can normally tell positive as you get a massive gas smell

shouldn't laugh but

So Negative Pressure would indicate that the tank is not breathing correctly and as fuel is getting burnt and removed form the tank a vacuum is starting to build this is not good

Positive pressure, would indicate that the evap system is not functioning as expected, the vapor should be off down a breather line to the tank under the drivers side front wing and then burnt, I have seen these evap tanks fall apart inside and fill the breather with carbon dust and granules, a royal pain to clean out,

I cut the lid off mine, removed the contents including the rotted foam, wire mesh and carbon, replaced the mesh and foam and filled it with pond filter granules, works fine and cost less than $20

Sounds like a crushed or plugged evap. line or charcoal cannister. Maybe test the purge valve for the fuel vapor cannister.

Maybe slightly off topic (but maybe closer to the subject than some risqué commentsSmile ) but a few months ago, I was replacing/restoring the fuel system on my 914 that had been sitting for over 10 years. The line from the fuel pump to the carbs had been plugged with a golf tee and a hose clamp. When I removed it, the fuel shot maybe 4 or 5 feet. After 10+ years! Wear eye protection my friends.

Felt I had to revive this thread as it hasn't had any activity in awhile!

Technically not "this week" as I actually did this a few months ago, but I managed to get my 968 into a new "home" in the form of a detached "shop" on our property, just across our driveway from our "normal" garage.    While I'll evolve the shop into a "mancave" over time, it's providing basic shelter to the 968 today:

As for new activity THIS week, I did attend a "Cars and Coffee" event, here's my dog watching over the 968 -

...and lastly, stopped by a shop that has done previous work on my car as they were having a meetup as well, and ran into a few "relatives" - my 968 is barely visible at the end, parked just in front of a 924 Turbo and a 924S.
