What did you do for your 968 this week?

It’s all subjective,  but I could never stand the looks of the 914 , it’s a plain matchbox .   I never drove a regular one but I had the rare opportunity to dive a 914-6 .   Hooooooly crap , was that a fun car !!  Felt like a rocket and handled as if it was on rollercoaster rails .

But still ugly as sin , IMHO .

Maybe they were going for performance with the mid-engine and handling, along with speed? But, yeah we know, it's an acquired taste.

In case you didn't know, the 914 spanked all the other 911 Porsches during its debut race at Le Mans, winning the race! (The only production Porsches available at that time were the 911s and 914s). Maybe that's why Porsche only put a 2.0 liter 6 cylinder from a 911T in the 914? You know, because Porsche didn't want to embarrass 911 owners even more...

Indeed, Porsche has always been mindful of their fiercely loyal 911 base and could not afford to erode that by producing other cars which would embarrass the 911 line .  They had the technology to put a lot more power in the 944 , but purposely didn’t because with its superb handling and ( arguably ) nicer lines than any 911 at the time, it might have taken away sales from the base .   And then there’s our car .. even though it was a remarkable achievement of power, handling, style and practicality, it could have easily been produced with a much more powerful engine.  But that would have carried the risk  of turning the 911 world upside down .

Washed the 968 using Opti-Coat No Rinse wash for the first time.   The car had been sitting though our unusually cold and wet winter in the carport and was covered in dirt and pollen.   The No Rinse wash worked quite well.   Had to jump start the car, then took it out for a spirited 1/2 hour drive.    God, I love this car!

Nice stuff isn’t it, Bill? I live in an apt complex and it’s sweet to be able to take a bucket of water out to the parking lot and wash my car under the car ports.

Try their HyperSeal ceramic coating, it’s just as impressive as the ONR. I don’t remember if I posted it here, but the ONR seemed to attract dust kind of like ArmorAll, but the HyperCoat doesn’t. (Or maybe it just hasn’t been as windy. Wind somehow blows dust up under my cover)

I did the rear brakes today.   If I’m not too sore, I’ll do the fronts tomorrow.   This was easier 20 years ago!

Do you have any idea how many are left on the road in the USA

We have a site that connects to the DMV database

That shows we have about 450 left and that includes coupe, sport, clubsport and cabs, with only 16 tiptronic cabs left registered

Well, it was finally warm enough on a Saturday to get outside and do the front brakes.   Still have to bleed and seat the new brakes, but I’m exhausted and that will wait for another day.   This would have been MUCH easier if I’d had some type of lift.    This make be my last brake job!

Bled the brakes and took the car out to bed the new brakes.    Felt great to drive it.   Next up, I have to replace the gear that runs the odometer.   Still trying to figure out if I can do it without removing the steering wheel.   I’ve read both that it can and can’t be done.   The idea of removing the steering wheel, with necessitates dealing with the airbag, is a bit intimidating.

Bill, I’ve had the odometer gears replaced twice ,once by a shop specializing in dashboard / vdo instrumentation repair and another time by a friend of mine who is an amateur mechanic.. ( I say “amateur” only because that’s not his main profession , but he’s a very accomplished, excellent mechanic )  Anyway, both times the steering wheel did NOT have to be removed .  I watched my friend do the job, it it does take patience and some very careful maneuvering of getting that whole piece out of there around the steering wheel, but it’s definitely doable.  There are just a few millimeters of clearance and requires continuous adjustment of the angles when pulling it out but don’t give up.   Actually I just remembered on another occasion he removed the panel to change the lighting with LED bulbs and also placing a reflective material in there to make what was a dim instrumentation, much brighter .   No steering wheel removal that time either .   Good luck .   Dan

Thanks to Waylander

Druramatic software installed and cabels on it's way , so in the future , i can do my own readings and reset the airbag light ,

The resistor to keep the light of came loose , installed the cs steering wheel few years ago,  taped an ziped it up nicely now .

Nice to be able to fix it without having to go to a dealer or specialist , to get it turned off

Thanks for the info and pep talk, Dan.   Sounds like I should swap the bulbs for LEDs as long as I’m in there.  Any suggestions on which bulbs to use?

I wish I could remember which LED bulbs he used, but I know one thing for sure ..I wanted blue lights and that’s what he sourced and installed .

I found the info : it was Jaeger engineering ( from Canada I believe ) who sold 968 LED kits - IIRC, they had them in white, red , blue, and amber …    Not sure they’re still in business though .   They also sold “ faux wood “ trim pieces for the 968 dash, door sides strips, and center console .

In the USA, we register automobiles in each of the 50 states. So, no national database of registered vehicles. Insurance companies (like Haggerty) have records of what cars they insure. But, I can't find where any of that information is available. Of course, you'd have to aggregate all the insurance company' data to get a better idea what's left. However, how many are sitting in a barn here without registration or aren't insured?

We can't even be sure how many made it here as production numbers for North American models don't reconcile with sales data...something like 2,234 coupes and 2,008 Cabriolets were supposedly produced.

The consensus is that about 6k went to USA and 6k to the ROW

Who knows for sure ?

And as for those just lost hiding again who knows, but even if you found them all its still a rare car

No US national database.  And the individual states DMVs do not have a search engine ( for the public anyway ) where you can identify a particular car make and model and how many are still registered.

I think Jeff Coe ‘s 968 registry is probably the best bet , but no idea if he’s still involved and manages that anymore ..
