What did you do for your 968 this week?

On RL, too. I think he might even be the 968 forum admin.

I haven't done anything for the car this week, but I just realized I have owned this car now for 10 years this July or Aug. I can't believe how fast the time has gone. It also means that my friend who owned the car originally has been gone as long.

Nothing stands still.

I will be doing some things to the car. I have had the rear shocks replaced with coil overs. I will be replacing the front struts, and all the bushings. I have a mo3o sway bar waiting in the trunk, and new tie rod ends. Basically the entire front end suspension. I am still waiting for the front upper strut mounts to be manufactured and released to Porsche. This has been over a year since I ordered them. I guess it's time to call sunset again to see if there's an update...

Quote:Bled the brakes and took the car out to bed the new brakes.    Felt great to drive it.   Next up, I have to replace the gear that runs the odometer.   Still trying to figure out if I can do it without removing the steering wheel.   I’ve read both that it can and can’t be done.   The idea of removing the steering wheel, with necessitates dealing with the airbag, is a bit intimidating.

Bill - as has been mentioned by others, you can get the gauge cluster out of the dash without removing the steering wheel - it is VERY tight and just the right angle is required, but it can be done.  Helps to have an extra set of hands.    I documented (with pictures) this process when I did a odometer gear replacement on my 968, but that post seems to be gone now (at least I can't find it).  Maybe we lost some in one of the site outages awhile back?

I know you can do it with the CS wheel, never tried it with airbag

And as for what I did to my 968 this week, squeezed past it to get to the tool box, wiped some dust off it with my jeans, and it still wont crank when hot

So it can stay there for another month or 2

Well not according to Luke at Sunset the last time I talked to him a month or so ago. That's frustrating as I have literally been waiting since I ordered them last August.

I will have to call him again. Thanks...

Update this week - According to Luke at Sunset, they are still not at Porsche Germany and are still on back order...Unless he's lying to me which I doubt. If someone has a different source? He checked his network and said no one has any in stock. I have been waiting since July/Aug of last year.

I put a new battery in the 968 today.  The old one wouldn’t hold a charge more than a few days.   I thought there might be a drain so I pulled out the multi-meter and couldn’t find any.   When I pulled out the old battery I discovered it was dated June, 2002.  Almost 14 years on a battery … not too shabby!

If anyone in the USA orders from this vendor, please let us know how it goes. Last year we ordered a bunch of parts from them, but their website didn't allow shipping the parts here. The work around was to purchase from the parts from them via ebay.

My next project (which I have put off too long) will be to pull the instrument cluster, replace the little plastic gear, and get my odometer working again.   I thought while I’m in there, I should improve the instrument cluster lighting, so looked around and bought this kit off of eBay.  Anyone ever tried these?

Two weeks ago I replaced the brake light switch because a) the cruise control stopped functioning and b) the lights weren't coming on.  In went the new one .... no help .... removed and tested the new one to find it didn't register short cct, something like 200ohms.  Cleaned up and inserted the old one so it now everything works ...... you might say I should have done that to start with, but all I've achieved is to wash some of the oil/dust deposit away from the internal contacts within the barrel.  It's a short-term solution as the cis are still inside and it'll soon give up again.

Anyway, RosePassion sent another without hesitation, it works properly, so I have a good one to insert at a later date. Bingo!!

Just read up through this thread .... cluster comes out of my cab, no worries except ...... beware the inline clip-sockets as they will be brittle!  Also, while it's out give all accessible pins a good clean.  This fixed a couple of issues including the random shutdown of my cluster and battery/fuel gauge readings

Yes.  Even if you simply walk up next to it and admire it, that counts.

I have to take everything off it to do that. It's okay to use them for storage right?

Many years ago, I ordered a pair of running board covers from Flash.  These are black and silver and have a big “968” that cover the sill beneath the door opening.   Before I could install them, (which was incredibly easy), they got lost in a move.   Well I found them today and put them on.  They look really nice.   I miss all the cool stuff Flash used to make.

I got caught in the blizzard last week on my way to court in Lassen County and wound up rolling and totaling my Highlander.  I was very fortunate to walk away with nothing but a few small cuts and scratches on the back of my right hand.   As a result, the 968 has been my daily driver for the last ten days (and will be while I look for another Highlander Hybrid).   It's been a while since I've spent this much time in the car.  It sure is fun!   What a pleasure to drive, almost feels like a slot car.   Took it on some beautiful backroads today to a friend’s birthday jam party.    Had room for my wife and me, two guitars in the trunk, and a small amp behind the seats.   Not bad!

Bill those covers do snaze up the inside when you open the door. I also miss all the cool stuff flash used to produce. Sorry to hear about your mishap. Glad you walked away relatively unscathed.
