What did you do for your 968 this week?

Located and purchased a complete air box on ebay.co.uk.  Unfortunately the vendor wouldn't ship to France so I've used my "at risk" brother as a mail drop.  It means I won't actually get it until this mess is resolved, but no matter as I have plenty of other jobs to keep me busy.  Very happy, good start to the week!

Yes it is possible as they are oil damped inside, I do not think its possible to repair them

i will get  that whole piece machined off and  will put some  alluminium or stainless adapter  there to last forever, will not pay 400+ eur for a piece of alluminium. still, i dont plan to use distributor  in future but now i need that fixed properly

yes guys, threads can be repaired but i miss some material which supports the front cover, which means  my distributor  is not aligned properly  and so on. i will not risk brittle magnesium from that  part to fall into my timing belt space,  will post photos of the  repair

I have spent 3 hours today repairing a water damaged Motronic ECU, it had one pin completely missing, bit of a pain as it was in row 3, right at the bottoms.

all done put it in the car just on the lead not bolted in, works fine, save a fellow 968 owner $1600

Check Valve 944 105 508 00, €106,33 at first search.

It's not cheap, but still possible to buy.

It was a busy week for my 968.

New timing and balance shaft belts. I went with the Gates racing belt, I expect it to last a long time. New rollers and water pump, motor mounts, and drive belts.

But, best of all, he found the problem with the air bag light. Bad connection on the clockspring, fixed it and reset it.

The icing on the cake was he found a crack in the sending unit in the gas tank. Sealed it up and the gas smell has greatly diminished.

Now the driving begins, once this quarantine lifts.

The sending unit was a source of your gas smell?

Yes, that light has been source of frustration for 2 years. It's been great seeing that light go off when I start her up.

As for the fuel smell, I am not going to count my chickens just yet. The mechanic I go to here in Reno trained here when he was first starting off and Porsche was located in Reno. He worked in the Bay area for 30 + years then moved back here and opened a small shop when he retired. One of his friends from corporate recently retired and also relocated to Reno. He asked him about the gas smell in my car, and his friends response was that many of the early 968s had stress cracks in the gas tanks and vapors would seep out of the cracks into the trunk space. We will examine that possibility if this latest solution does not work. The crack in the sending unit was located around one of the nipples that attach to the rubber hoses.

Thought tank cracks were a 924 thing with the steel tanks, not heard of cracks in the plastic tanks

I know they are a problem in the 924 and 944 because the tanks are steel and thrashing the car around causes the fuel to shift, which flexes the tank resulting in eventual cracking. As for the 968 tanks, I am taking his word for it since he works for the company.

On a happier note, the smell has diminished substantially. Still noticeable on hard left turns, so no NASCAR for me. I may be looking at a couple of problems.

Put some miles on her this weekend. The Gates race belt with a Conti balance belt seems to be the hot ticket. The Conti belt is a lot quieter than the Gates balance shaft belt was. Not sure why, but the difference is pretty noticeable.
