Looks great, well done!!

I need a "to do" list to give me focus and motivation. Where to put such a thread?

I gave some “winter maintenance” attention to Ava, this time with an annual oil change, cleaning of as many body ground points as I could find, and fixing a cracked plastic headlight bucket.

Next will be replacement of a water temperature sender unit, and then I’ll move on to similar lists on two other cars.

Does anyone know how to see/find the engine ground? I haven’t tried laying on top of the engine to look down between the engine and firewall, but I’ve looked from above the engine on both sides and from beneath the car and can’t find an engine ground cable.

The engine ground it right in the middle at the back and is down a good few inches

Not easy to get at

Today was not a good day Sad Sad no jobs completely finished.

Firstly I ran up the engine to see if the dash would work, as on my return from Barcelona in heavy rain the instruments all fell over. Today the dash worked just fine, so I guess in have a bad earth/live either leading to the dash or the associated fuse. My intention is to pull the dash in the process of installing cruise control, so at that time I shall inspect and clean the various connections. Then wait to see if the fault reoccurs.

Painting the injector cover ... well that wasn't a success either! Firstly I thought yellow for the letters, but after seeing another example I thought maybe yellow for the cover and black for the letters. I bought caliper paint as I thought it must be heat resistant. Cleaned the injector cover thoroughly, let the cover and paint can sit in the sun to dry and warm. Sprayed the cover ...... it was AWFUL! Is special paint required for aluminum?? Now I must strip back the paint and either spray again or just buff/shine instead.

Checking belt tensions ..... 1000Kms after changing the cam and balance belts I checked all was still correct, whist the injector paint dried. All was good except the balance belt / idler clearance which was 10thou instead of 20thou. Undid retaining nut to permit adjustment but don't have sufficient clearance between the fan assembly to get my torque wrench on the nut. Must buy torque with smaller drive or sockets with larger drive Sad

Also looked at the inside of the air box with a view to improving the airflow.... I can see the upper section could move the air more smoothly towards the MAF.

So all up not a good day, but some progress and in any case I enjoyed spending time on my 968.

There is a voluminous thread regarding Air Box Modification. Countless hours and $$$ were spent proving that the addition of drilled holes (of the correct size and placement, and finished correctly) along with a K&N air filter will add up to 10 HP. Failure to follow the directions completely and correctly are likely to produce lesser results.

You are, of course, welcome to modify your car in any way you see fit, but the testing that was done on the air box was incredibly detailed by the best performance engineers available to this forum.

Regards,

Jay

Hi Jay, I've read the thread and the paper by Flash, and am in no way suggesting anything but admiration for the effort put in, and the selfless publication of the results. However, on examining the air box yesterday I noted the small baffles below the filter would tend to move the air towards the MAF, but the baffles above the filter would tend to cause turbulence and slow the air. In addition the various sharp corners will also cause dead areas rather than smoothly moving the air in the desired direction. I suspect it is a "law of deminishing returns" as the major work has been done, but I don't mind having a go once my other maintenance is complete. I don't expect I'll get to it for quite some time, but I'll let you know how it works out. Cheers, Robert.

Better day today.

Replaced lower front grill - not easy getting off the old bits, but the new one holds the horizontal bars nicely in place.

Paint inside of PORSCHE letters atop of engine - went really badly yesterday, so stripping back to start again.

Change oil pressure sender - replaced sender and spade connectors, gauge works properly now.

Find problem with dashboard ... Read up on this, apparently the cluster clips can cause problems; will check later as dash now working.

Locate and buy air box - seen on eBay so will chase up for later project.

Check balance belt tension as more than 1000Km since change - done, all tensioned and torqued.

Progress, but I know the more difficult jobs are ahead.....

I still cant work out what this relentless hunt for more power is all about, if 150mph and 0-60 in 6.0 is to slow go buy a faster car,

a 10 year old BMW M5 is much faster and cheaper, as screwing up expensive parts for 5 bhp extra is to my mind a complete waste of time, you get 10 BHP more by driving it on a cold wet day.

the car gets faster with better bouncy bits, decent brakes, and some driver training

I know opinions are like butt holes, everyone has one

And always will be. I've not gone through every 136 pages, but this thread alone should be a great resource for 968 owners interested in DIY repairs/upgrades.

Well done for starting it 10 years ago!

Waylander, I've asked you this question on your Starter motor thread, but this is a better place to put it .....

Your starter looks polished .... did you use some sort of polishing paste and polishing pad? I ask because I am stripping back the paint from my injector cover, and wish to "polish off" the surface once it is paint free.

Cheers, Robert.

Thanks, I'll think about how to proceed once the cover is yellow-paint free.

TIme for me to start chiming in this thread as I'm developing a habit of trying to spend some time each weekend working on my 968.   :-)

Last weekend:
  • Got radio replaced - old one (aftermarket alpine) was not producing any audio.    New Kenwood in place now.   Front speakers sound great - back speakers...not so much (actually they're terrible, I'm guessing they're original and sound dead).
This weekend (so far)
  • Removed interior roof trim between rear hatch and sunroof (again) trying to isolate and fix a bad rattle I have (see my separate thread for more details).   Wound up adding some thin foam "fabric" as isolation between anything I could find that rattled.     Still have the rattle.     Suspect hatchback hinge on that side, will likely try again tomorrow.    At least now I'm getting really good at removing that trim piece, AND I have a functional stereo that somewhat covers up the rattling noise.   :-)
  • Removed the runroof fully for the first time (and went for a quick drive!).   Discovered the plastic on the "wind deflector" is broken a bit on the passenger side.    Still holds in place, but is splitting apart where it attaches to hinge on far passenger side of sunroof.   Ugh.
  • ...and the best item today - got my Durametric working (finally, have had it for weeks, but had a bad adapter cable - just got a good one from Durametric earlier this week).   Checked, then cleared, all my DME fault codes and airbag codes.     They were there since long before I bought the car - will obviously investigate further if they trigger again, but car seems to be running well, and I'm happy to finally be able to look at a dash without the master caution and airbag lights constantly lit up!
Hopefully a bit more to come tomorrow.

I know what you mean, the only good thing about my dash falling over last week is that I drove for a couple of hours without that Master Warning staring at me Sad

Congrats on the durametric, it is an invaluable piece of kit.

The plastic deflector ends are available new from Porsche. One of the few things on this car that is easy and cheap to fix. Smile

Funny - I had not even thought to look for "new" parts for that issue.   Thanks the hint - I'll go dig up the part number and do some searching!
