Transaxle drain plug
#1

I searched through old posts on 968.net and thought I had seen a reference to a gasket or seal for the drain plug on the manual gearbox for our cars. But checking my parts source they are telling me that there isn't one listed.......So is there a seal or gasket for the drain plug?

Thanks!!

i don't remember there being one in there - typically, on a differential, that is a pipe thread and it seals itself

Thanks Flash. That is what I have typically seen myself. But thought I would ask. I guess I will be investigating closer this weekend to see where the oil drip is coming from.

Thanks

I just change the lube on my transaxle and both plugs had crush washers. Turns out they are the same size and look identical to the washer used on the oil drain plug. It looked like to me the washers were supposed to be there but it is possible that the PO added them. I put new ones on and have not had any leaks so far.

Probably should clarify before I get in trouble for wrong terminology. What I am calling a crush washer is the one time use aluminum washer used on the oil drain plug. Actually, it seemed hard to believe that Porsche would engineer to use the same washer on three different plugs but I guess you get lucky every once in a while.

I might add that the plugs on the transaxle of my 944 were of the type that Flash mentioned. No place to use a washer there.

Where did you purchase the washer?

Thanks!

I order parts from various places. Paragon, Zims, Mid America. I think the last time when I ordered an oil filter from MidAmerica I also ordered a pack of 10 of the oil plug washers. I have also picked up the washer from my local Porsche dealer. I think they are fairly standard.

Hope that helps.

Finished changing the trans lube earlier today....mine didn't have the washers. I also remember from searching posts on the other site that a 17mm hex key was needed to remove the plugs. Not on mine they were 10mm.

As many ready probably already know.....I found the easiest way to get the oil in the trans is by removing the drivers rear wheel. Then you have a good shot at the fill plug on the trans.

Thank!!

Question: can sluggish shifting be caused by the trans lube being too high? When mine was changed to 75-90 GL5 Amsoil, the trans actually became harder to shift. I think the car was at an angle when it was filled, so the level would be higher than the bottom of the plug. Could this be the problem?

Also, my 92 was a 10mm with an aluminum crush washer too. And it was absurdly tight.
