Defective transaxle
#1

My 92 is going to be without it's trans as soon as fall comes, I can't part with it while it's nice weather. The car grinds going into 3rd and pops out of 5th. I've never rebuilt one of these and was wondering if anyone has any input as to common problems and where is the best place to gather parts I may need.

Sorry to hear about your problem. Just do some searches, you will find tons, I mean tons, of discussion about the 968 gear box.

if it's grinding, that means that metal is meeting metal in a most unhappy fashion - that will ultimately result in a piece of it getting where it shouldn't - this can be very expensive - it can be the difference between a $2000 rebuild and a $7000 rebuild

it's only a week - i'd rent a car and get it done

Syncro is gone in 3rd, 5th sounds worse. I would at least flush the tranny to get any metal out of the oil. I assume there is a magnetic plug in the tranny like the 944/951 gearbox has?

Read the article I put up about my transmission baulking going into second and then getting hard to select third, etc. It was syncro's gone, plus the second gear output shaft. I had also lost about 1/8th of the circumference of the friction plate. As per Flash's post - get it looked at, I am not sure what came first, but I replaced the clutch, flywheel and had to have the gearbox rebuilt. Ouch $$$$$$
