Transaxle warranty repair coverage?
#1

Can anybody confirm or dispute this?

I had a 944 guy (mechanic) stop by today to look at my dead 968, considering purchase as a project car. I mentioned the transaxle had been overhauled a couple thousand miles before the catastrophic timing belt failure.

This guy told me he understood that Porsche has been handling these pinion bearing issues on a warranty basis, even on cars that are long out of warranty.

This flies in the face of everything I read about the pinion bearing repairs issue several years back. I recall one forum participant had been collecting info on pinion bearing repairs in hopes of submitting it to Porsche to get some action, but it seemed like that was going nowhere.

Can anybody tell me definitively if something has changed with Porsche covering these repairs? The guy today was pretty sure he knew what he was talking about, citing mechanic friends he knows who work at Porsche dealers. Maybe they handled similar issues on 944's differently? Or is this guy just blowing smoke to make me think my rebuilt transaxle is not worth more than one that has not been rebuilt?

many moons ago, porsche handled this repair, even though the warranty had expired. to my knowledge, that "offer" has long since expired. i believe it was also limited to the original owner of the car.

as for value, it would come down to what was done. if it was just a pinion bearing repair, there would be no value increase, as there is no correlation between mileage, age, and failure, and not every box fails. if it was entirely rebuilt, and done correctly, then of course it would have more value than an original and untouched box.

Apparently there were a very limited number that were covered very early and only under duress...I would venture to guess that the possibility of being covered under warranty at this point is so close to zero that it reaches statistically impossible.

Good Luck,

I don't believe that anyone on this forum has had a pinion bearing failure repaired under warranty. I suppose it is possible if the failure occurred while the car was within the original warranty period, but our collective experience has been that they fail long after the car was out of warranty and were therefore not covered. Porsche has never, to the best of my knowledge, agreed that the failure, which was due to improper preloading of the bearing, was a defect in workmanship. Others on the forum may have a better take on this than I.

Thanks all for your replies, confirming my understanding of things.

I did end up selling to this guy, at a mutually satisfactory price. He's confident of his ability to fix the engine as a "hobby project" and frankly I'll be psyched if one day he drives the car by and is having a ton of fun with it.
