timing belt failure
#81

4 pages and this is just showing today in my new post search.

Man, sorry to hear about the car Dan. I understand the knot that waiting can put in a guys stomach when its something he loves. I hope the damages are minor and that you get your car back running stronger then before.

Thanks , I also hope the car will be better off out of this, but it's just a sick feeling when you have an engine that runs absolutely perfect and as strong as when it left the factory floor .. and then this happens and you spend thoudands of dollars when it really did not need it..or deserve it. On the other hand, it teaches me a lesson to look at all factors not just the recommended mileage interval for replacement. Even if I had only 5k miles on the new belts since the last change it would have not made any difference, I still should have replaced them a lot earlier than the six years they were in there

So here's my delima:
I just bought my 968, I live in Texas and cars in in California.

Car has 82k miles and was ready to book the flight when......during the course of conversation about maintenance the big red flag went up! The owner mentioned that he put a box in the back of the car for me, new belts and water pump! Ok so I was going to drive this back but not now. The maintenance records indicate that all regularly scheduled service was done on time and by reputable shops but here is a car that is 15 years old and the belt/water pump haven't been done in years (first water pump)

Bummer part is I could get the service done here for free. But now I need to either have done in CA first, then drive home or flatbed/ship to Texas for about a grand.

I just don't want to take the chance, especially on a cross half country trip. UGH!

and here the are i only posted two photos but all the valves looked pretty much like these..one set even a bit worse, but that photo came out too blurry, I got too close and the auto focus did not work very well..

pity, check out how clean and beautiful this engine looks after 102,000 miles..

Ooo Ouch..

That's a bummer. From the little bit of the valve stem that can seen, it looks like there was very little carbon build-up. And, the tan color indicates a good air/fuel mix.
I'm sure you've researched replacing the whole engine or going in and replacing all the bearings. However the bottom end probably has a lot of life left in it.

My mechanic said you can eat off that engine - at 102k miles he claims he's never seen anything with such little or no carbon deposits and he attributes it all to the fact that I have only used Chevron gas in the 968.. never anything else. He thinks they have additives that are far better
than any other brand of gas.. just his opinion, and now I'm starting to believe it. BTW, I never used fuel additives or did any Run-Rite thing.. etc.
Just the gas. I use Shell in the MBZ, now wonder if I should switch. The Nissans I could care less about. LOL.. so I'll buy any gas for those

Here's a couple more pix - to see how clean things are.. Oh, that "foreign object" is a snake light in case anyone wonders, not some alien creature that crawled in the intake

I had another " are you f'n kidding me ?! " moment today ( as if all the crap wasn't enough already.. ) :

The back half of the timing belt / camshaft case which bolts on to the head is damaged , the shaft into which the bolt fits is broken among other things ( damn thing is completely worn out and the stress from what just happened was probably all it needed to fall apart ) is not repairable, so the whole thing needs to be replaced. Porsche in Atlanta was the only dealer in the U.S. which had this part ... for $ 860 !! and that's just one half of the friggin cover !
The whole thing is $ 1,200. I only need that half though. So in my natural state of panic combined with disgust I called Bob who said " check with dismantlers, there has to be a dozen of those things in decent condition " .
Five minutes later, and 15 min away from my house I located one. Thanks for the quick thinking Flash .
Not cheap, at $ 250 for a used piece of tin ( ok, aluminum ) but still a huge sigh of relief and a heck of a lot cheaper than what I was afraid was going to add a bunch to an already hefty price tag.

I had you in mind when I posted the info about that relatively intact 968 at Parts Heaven. I figured as you got further into this repair there would be some additional problems, never fails, right?

lol - yup - i had the ones on the white car changed before i picked it up and brought it home too

i have now gotten lucky TWICE though on the blue car - the balance belt was crumbled up in pieces in the bottom of the cover when i got it at less than 23k miles - this is the second one to go and not take out the head with it

i am going down tomorrow to buy a live chicken

I spoke too soon.. This one is not one in the "expensive" category ( good news ) but still in the "frustrating, annoying, inexplicable, inexcusable and stupid " category ( bad news ) : the valve guides were supposed to be delivered today, so when they weren't...my mechanic called Porsche, who replied: Oh, sorry, it seems the system search turned up that all stock is out and they're on back order at all of our U.S dealerships - we expect to get them from Germany and they should be here by the 19th of this month. That said, for a $ 30 dollar extra charge they could have a set expressed here in 5-7 days ETA.

So fingers crossed, they won't be out of stock in Germany as well and I'll have them next week, but all I can say at this point is WTF ?!!

I also spoke too soon when I posted that I would never put a Chevy engine in a Porsche - the more crap like this
keeps happening, the more I'll see the logic of being able to walk into the local NAPA or Kragen or Autozone, or Pep Boys.. take your pick, and walk out that very same day with ANY part I need for the engine .. not to metion the cost of that part. Bet they don't charge $ 800 for half of a cast metal COVER plate with no moving parts on a Chevy.

Ok, I vented ! I love this 968, I really do but sure starting to question whether all this nonsense is worth it
I need a glass of wine to calm down. So cheers to all you guys, 'cause I know I'm preaching to the choir .

ds968: your local porsche dealer has access to German data to let you know if they are available. If not, other shops like lindsey racing may have some(I think the guides for the 968, 944S2 and 32v 928 are the same..).....

Just one glass!!!!!! I'd have thought you'd been through at least a case by now.

I'm back down in Paso tonight and tomorrow. I'm about to head off to dinner and I promise that I'll do my best to drown all of your 968 related sorrows in some good red wine.

Thanks. I'm guessing they did show they are available if they indicated a set can be sent via express, but I'll double check tomorrow and if not, I'll contact lidsey racing..

I wonder what an LS1 would be like in a 968 - that would be a wonderful combo...

Hang in there - looking forward to the exclamations of satisfaction when this is fixed up.
