Timing / Balance belt opinions
#1

My new to me 1995 had the belts replaced in 2013, mileage was not noted on work order, I would estimate around 5000 miles. So what say you? Replace to be safe, or do I have some time/mileage left in them? I will run some video this evening with the engine running, I did notice the balance belt had some slight flutter to it, but it seems tight enough that it would never skip a tooth.

Your opinions would be appreciated.

Doesn't matter what they look like, 5 years is 5 years. Replace em.

Just did this on my 93 with only 4k on the belts, so I feel ya.

Yep, It's not just wear....it's hardening and deterioration of the rubber.  This is probably the most significant expense for owners of these reliable cars but if you try to cheat them they will slap your wallet hard.  Having the heads reworked is about a $10k proposition.  And believe me there are plenty of witnesses out there.

Replace them.

I trust my 968's major work to Charlie Lacey at Innovative Autosport in Carrollton.  He will recommend you replace the water pump and few other things while you are in there.

I suggest looking at the first post on this thread :

Also keep in mind that places which sell the belts are under no obligation to strictly observe the manufacturers' shelf life recommendations . With both the age and the rarity of our cars , it's not as if those belts turnover like fresh doughnuts and although not a probability, there is always a possibility ( albeit slight ) you may end up with a belt which has been sitting on a shelf for ten years or more. So ask the seller to tell you what the production date code is before you agree to buy it and have it shipped.
