Cambelt / balance belt replacement
#1

Hello

Sorry to un-earth a old topic, however can anyone advise me of the best place to obtain the DIY instructions to replace belt.

I did them a while ago and used a great guide which involved using a credit card to obtain balance belt roller clearance how in my old age I have put them in that safe place no guys can find when wanted.

Any help would be great.

Thank you ?

If you have any questions, please let me know. It’s all fresh in my mind at this point. One difficulty I had was trying to compress the hydraulic cylinder for the belt tensioner. I ended up making a bushing per the drawing in the workshop manual and bolted it in place of the roller just above the tensioner. I then used a large screwdriver as a lever to slowly compress the cylinder. When the cylinder was fully compressed I then inserted a stiff wire in the holes to hold it closed and then it was easily removed. You can probably use a stack of washers in place of the bushing if you don’t have access to a lathe.

yep, that works

(I use a socket sized to just apply pressure to the outer edge of the tensioner housing)

here's whats in the Workshop Manual

Interesting how they don't mention compressing the cylinder (with the cylinder installed) on that page. I tried for some time but I could not remove the hydraulic cylinder without compressing it. Maybe the cylinder can be wiggled out without compressing it but I struggled and gave up.

I found this instruction the same section 15 of the manual but at the end of the section. It talks of using a bushing and a special spreading tool to compress the cylinder.

Once the cylinder was compressed it came out very easily.

Ah yes... i was able to remove the tensioner from the car without compressing it first, but yeah I had to wiggle it just right and with the plastic cover in the way that made it a little bit of a challenge to get it free

I imagine the expectation for a line mechanic would be to simplycut the belt. It's being replaced, it has no value, and it makes the job faster which is what they're most concerned about.

Hi , well cambelt on, balance belt to go, is there any accurate way to tension the balance belt, last time I adjusted it and had a whine, so had to adjust until it stopped.

However I have heard of a kricket tool, but would this work? As the balance belt does not have a flat side also belt is measured in lbs but manual states mm displaced?

Any advice would be great

Thanks

Correct tension is rather loose For the balance shaft belt

If the part of the belt next to the water pump pulley feels tight

Its WAY too tight

Search the forum for some tips on how to feel the correct tension with your fingers, otherwise an experienced independent mechanic is a good idea

Have you checked out the arnnworxs tools? They have what appears to be a functional belt tensioning tool.

www.arnnworx.com/catalog/

Anyone out there have any experience with it?

I am in the UK and have done this job a few times now, the balance belt always feels much looser than should be correct, but it is right.

If they are Conti belts the few I have used tend to whine a lot more than gates belts, its the shape of the teeth on the belt

I know this is an old thread, but those about to change belts are still likely to follow it, so I'm adding a bit of detail....

Belts in general are frequently tensioned using the 90deg twist test ..... this is too tight for the balance belt, causing fairly loud whining and early bearing failure.  Tension the belt to 180deg twist but also ensure correct belt-tensioner clearance; about 1/2mm from memory.

Does anyone know the spec clearance between the balance shaft belt and the lower guide.  It seems so close.

Hey there, did you look at clark's garage? It's mainly 944s, but 968s figure too. The clearance between the belt and lower roller is 0.5mm. I recently changed all belts plus water pump and a few hoses, by following Clark's instructions and making up my own sprocket holding tool .... all worked fine except the belt whine. Advice from this forum was correct, balance belt was too tight, 180 twist did the trick, 0.5mm clearance on lower roller still possible.
