Cam Belt Front and Back Covers
#1

My OEM magnesium covers are in really bad shape. I'm going to be changing

the belt so perhaps it is time to address the problem.

Has anyone tried the aluminum covers that are now being sold? Are there

any other options?

I don't think there any other options unless you find a used magnesium in good shape. Maybe yours can be sanded to remove the corrosion and repainted? That's what I did with mine, it had a little corrosion but was otherwise solid with no broken bolt holes or anything like that.

The aluminum part is fine, in fact probably a more durable replacement, just expensive.

Unfortunately, my bolt holes have cracked. It was that way when I got the car and kind of band-aided together.

I'm almost afraid to touch it, might completely fall apart.

I've been looking for a used one, but they also seem rather pricey.

I'm surprised you can even find used ones for sale ..at any price . I'm glad to hear that aluminum ones are available (pricey or not ..) it's a relief because when my magnesium back cover needed to be replaced due to the same bolt holes cracking , IIRC I was starting to panic because it took what seemed like forever to finally locate a salvage yard that had one .

The aluminum part is what you get if you order it direct from Porsche, I would suggest sunset as a starting point.

I don't know if there are other aftermarket vendors.

I got mine about a year ago from Rennbay for $299. Of course Travis was running a special on these at the time!

Just a comment on any magnesium Porsche part. If you sand them always refinish with protective coat or major corrosion will gradually destroy the part. I learned that lesson when I sand blasted the fan and housing on my '88 911. Several years later, in addition to the black surface corrosion that had covered all surfaces, eruptions began to appear, kinda like large cracked blisters. Chemistry is amazing.

Simply bumping this thread to see if anyone has updates.   I think I need both the front and back covers, and they are expensive.   Thanks.

Pretty universally agreed that the magnesium parts are NLA, and Aluminium parts are $$$ (have not heard of any failures with the aluminium parts)

Hi Jay, thanks for commenting.   Take a look at mine, they look warped.  Everywhere I look the 2 pieces that make up this cover are about $500.00 which is a bit hard to swallow.  And I guess the magnesium parts get brittle and thus break apart on disassembly.
