Lower Balance Belt shaft looks off by 1 tooth
#1

I was tracking down a coolant leak and noticed that my lower balance belt shaft sprocket looks like it is off by 1 tooth ,,, should I be worried ?

Car runs fine, I verified TDC marks on camshaft pulley, upper BB shaft, #1 cylinder and flywheel.

It normally lines up exactly on the lower, half tooth out at the top

It can cause so much vibration the oil pickup tube cracks, have you checked the gap between the idle wheel directly above in that picture, and the balance belt as it goes round the shaft pulley, it should be 0.5 mm, this is to stop the belt jumping a tooth

Yep, you're going to have a good view of all sorts of stuff which will be much easier to deal with when the covers, belts, pump, etc are out of the way!  I've just been down a similar route which changing my booster and am very happy with all the extras I did; predicting greater reliability and less time wasted in the future.  Good luck,

Well, I survived my first water pump, belts, idlers and tensioner replacement. Car started right up and no bent valves  Big Grin  Thanks to Clarks manual and all those that have come before me with all the great posts that came in handy. All the shaft seals looked like they had been changed before my ownership and were not leaking so I left them alone. My balance belt feels a bit tight, but I am going to run it for a few 100 miles and come back for an adjustment if needed. I think the oil filter housing is leaking where it connects to block or possibly the oil cooler hose o-rings are bad, I cleaned the area up and will monitor. I also think the oil pan gasket is needing to be replaced.

Also changed the oil and used 20W-50, pressure at idle when car is warmed up is at 4, before it was at 3.

both those jobs are the hardest on the car,

front crossmember has to come off for the pan gasket, and you really will find it easier to change the gasket and leaking internal o rings in the oil filter housing while the cross member is out the way

I have had to get the oil filter housing skimmed flat on two cars so far, Oh and the exhaust heatshield is held on by the top two bolts of the housing, you need elastic man to reach them

Well done, that was quick!  And hopefully the lower balance now lines up as expected.... Clark's is a good resource, and given the 968 manual frequently says "xyz is explained in the 944 manual section ab.c" it is a necessary augmentation.

There were a few extra parts.

This fell from around the crankshaft pulley area when removing the back cover. It looks like it was sheared from a stud in the block. ????

and this black connector ????

That looks like parts of your cam position sensor

Have you done a blink test on your car to see if it shows any faults

Ignition on, no start, hold gas pedal on the floor till the engine check light flashes, release throttle

Then count the flashes

I just brought mine in for the follow up after the belts replacement. It had a buzzing vibration at 3850-4250, which turned out to be a balance shaft off by one tooth.

All fixed, back to smooth and quiet power! Amazing how much difference a single tooth made to the overall feel of the car.
