Three options on belt change; which one?

My cars coming up for a belt change, I've been given basically 4 options (with labour hours in brackets);



1. Just belts (3hr)

2. Belts & Rollers (4hr)

3. As above with front oil seals (6hr)

4. As above with Cam Chain and tensioner guide rails inc re-dialing back in the cam (10hr)



Definately 1. isn't worth while, I'm guessing 3. over 2. is probably worth it. But option 4. I'm told is "recommended" due to age (15 years) but is a considerable extra cost.





For info (in UK Pounds)all parts, labour & VAT



1. 311.38

2. 671.17

3. 954.35

4. 1283.06





Is Option 4 and the cam chain and tensioner guide rails/re-dialing in worth doing?

this is fairly easy



for the seals, how long has it been since the seals have been installed? is it leaking?



for the cam chain and pads, how many miles on the engine? have the pads been inspected? has it always run on synthetic oil?

Thanks for the response;



It's not leaking, seals I can find nothing in the service history (which is very comprehensive), he did say if needed,

86,000 miles on the engine, pads haven't been inspected (he did say 'only if needed' so assume that's inspection). Yes always run on synthetic, Mobil 1 0w/40.

if that is indeed miles and not clicks, then you are right on the edge and considering it is quite valid

if it isn't leaking, i think i'd leave the seals alone - of course, that does mean that you may have to get back in there if it starts leaking



i would definitely carefully inspect the pads and cam teeth - if there is any sign of wear on the upper pad (the only one you will be able to see) you can bet the lower is twice as bad, and then i would change them and the chain - if there is no wear at all on the upper pad, and the teeth look good, then i'd leave that for your next belt job, where you will probably want to refresh the head anyway

Hey flash - I took the same approach on my car (doing belt just past 60K and seals were bone dry) but decided to roll the dice on water pump since it had no seepage evidence and bearing felt good. "Back in the day" when my shop did Porsche (all were 944s) we did the pump with every belt change. Opinion?

there is no reason to do the pump every change, unless every change is 8 years away or something crazy like that - since the belts have to be changed every 3 years max, i would say that every other change would be more than fine for the pump, and maybe every third one if a reasonable number of miles are on it each time (basically enough to keep the seal pliant, but not too many to wear it out)
