OEM Speaker question
#1

I have a '92 cab with a radio that has never worked while I owned the car. Last weekend I won a raffle and am entitled to a free system. I have a lot of questions I would like to answer before I go meet the installers of the new system.

Are there speakers in the door OTHER than the little round tweaters up at the top? It looks as though there is a grill along the base of the door, but I cannot tell. If so, what size speaker will it hold?

I presume there are speakers in the back. What size are these?

I did not win a new amp, so if there are any recommendations out there for a system that is powerful enough to use without an amp, I would love to hear about it.

Any issues connecting the new radio with the antennae (?) in the windshield?

Thanks,

Keith

Keith,

I suggest that you search the site for stereo installations and speakers. There is a wealth of info about the area that you are going into.

As far as some fast answers... yes there are speakers behind the grill at the bottom of the doors. Yes, there are speakers in the back on the sides of the car. There are many systems that will drive the existing system fine. The more you spend, the better the sound will get.

There are no issues connecting to the windshield antenna, just be sure to power the antenna booster, which is required.

You might want to locate and print the electrical drawings relating to the radio, speaker and antenna connections.

The options list on your car will also tell how many speakers came in the car from Germany.

you need to check your option codes - depending on your options, the rear speakers are either 4x6, or enclosed 4" with a 1" tweeter - the latter will require some rewiring to use with an aftermarket deck - the 4x6 design will not provide much bottom end, no matter which aftermarket unit you choose, so be prepared for that - the factory woofer in the door is not much better - the enclosed factory units can be made to go down to about 60hz, but don't do that well once a lot of power is applied

i agreed that there are a lot of decks out there with "enough" power to run all the stock speakers - it really comes down to what you want to hear

i ran a pioneer for a long time and used no amps for the 4 channels, and only a 6.5" 200W bazooka for sub (which is for sale) - it was "fine" - ultimately i wanted more, and went about making that happen, but it wasn't necessary

the biggest thing when looking for a deck, is to choose one with ample equalization features, so as to accommodate the less than perfect speaker locations - i would choose one with at least 3 full parametric bands, and preferably 5, or at least 9 graphic bands and preferably 16

i think i would get the best deck i could for that deal, upgrade the factory door and rear speakers a notch, and add a sub

side note: pay CLOSE attention to the display and sunlight - most deck displays become all but invisible in direct sunlight - your sunglasses may affect this too - as an example, my raybans filter out blue light - my otherwise visible display all but vanishes

Or better yet, down load the schematic, print out and bring it to them. I have heard horror stories about the hacks that work at these shops.

Thanks for all the advice. I know there is a lot of info on the stereo section of Forums, but I really just wanted to know the sizes of what's in the car at the moment so I could start the process of choosing the new stuff. I don't want to make any modifications to this car. Thanks Flash!

I went to the shop and found two ferraris in a state of total interior disassembly, mind boggling amount of wiring exposed, steering wheel, dash, off, all seats and panels out, etc. I guess they know what's up, they have a terrific collection of vehicles in line for their work.

Or, they took it all apart and now can't get it back together! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Just kidding...perhaps they really do know what they're doing and will do a good job. The 968 isn't a difficult car to install audio gear, but there were a number of tricks that Porsche pulled with wiring and speakers as they saw the need. Do what smokie suggested and take them a schematic. Make sure it is the correct one for your car based on your option sticker though, 'cause they are different. That should save them a ton of time. I did an above average, way more than adequate install and used all the factory locations, so yes, you can do it without modifying the car. Good luck.

Thanks for the good advice. Where do I find a schematic?

Okay - I have tired reading much of the stereo stuff here and am not coming up with what I need.

The rear speakers work...the ones behind my head. I have the ones in the doors behind the grill, then two other grills inthe door car. Nothing in either door is working. I have played with all the stereo controls and am getting nothing. Can't afford a stereo right now untill transaxle is done.

Took off lower grill cover under armrest. Played with conector - reattached - still nothing out of anything in the door.

Open to suggestions.

Thanks

I can rebuild the stupid motor in a 968 in my sleep. However the nuances of the stereo escape me. I can't even get the antenna to work. I did notice that when I took my seats out for recovering that there are some kind of little amplifiers under the seats. Maybe one of them is bad.

Next thing to check is the connections behind the stereo, to make sure they are still in place. I would suggest taking the door panels off to get at the speaker wires, then take the stereo out and check the wires for continuity. You can also use a radio with speaker outputs to briefly test the speakers and wiring with some jumpers.

So you have speakers in under your armrests? That's at least a start. When I first got my car I spent an evening trying to figure out why I had no sound in the front only to realize that there was nothing under the armrests.

What Lear mentioned is a good place to start.. depending on the options on your car, there might be an amplifier under each seat (option code 490 -- HiFi Sound system with Amps). The next place to look would be the wiring in the dash, as Tama said.

Ugh. Dumb question - where is the option code. Actually, I only took the driver's loer panel off. I was soaked by the time I got that back on, so I think I will just leave it. I am not looking forward to tearing out the center console. I guess I may as well leave it alone for now.

I have to get the transaxle sorted then get my knee scoped on the 12th, so I can't drive it any way.

Option codes will be found in the trunk on a sticker, under the carpet. Mine's on the back panel. Center console doesn't really need to come out. Just pull the clock and cubby, the trim around the shifter (two screws, under the ashtray) and then you should be able to pull the radio out.

Well I had - had the stereo working - I pulled some fuses earlier to see if they were good and now I can't get the code letters to pop up and it has been sitting for hours. It should have reset.

I can find absoloutely nothing in the trunk for option codes - not a single sticker any where. I did however fins a brand new Porsche Air Compressor in the driver's rear well under the carpet. lol

Okay - I just opened the maintenence book - looks like a square white sticker -

Ok - VIn

next line - 968 310

next - L908 BM

Next - C02 XD4 331 437 454 490 0991

probably not other speakers. there are only 3 setups for the front.

1. the standard is a speaker under the armrest and the tweeter up top.

2. the same as above but with a midrange right next to the woofer under the armrest.

3. the same as #1 but with a midrange above the map pocket with visible round grille.

either #2 or #3 came with an amp under a seat.

the other "hi-fi" setup was the #1 setup, but with an additional amp for the rear.

it is possible you have an amp under the seat that is dead. it will be under the carpet. you won't be able to get to it without pulling the seat.

first though, i would test the deck with a known working speaker. then i would test the speakers with a known working source.

Thanks flash,

Yea I need to pull the deck...I can't get under the vehicle without a lift. I get real bad vertigo working on my back under something. This is a left over side effect from my cancer treatment.

I will check out the amp connections first, then go from there. I am sure I can look up more of this stuff once my Bently manual gets here this week.

you don't have to get under the car to do anything stereo related

bentley manual??? i went to their website, and they show nothing. i found a couple of links to what looks like it, but have not successfully downloaded it yet.

the actual porsche workshop manual is downloadable though, and it has diagrams
