OEM Speaker question
#61

I just posted a response to that, our posts crossed. See above.

So I guess I have to look under the seats for an amp and possibly a wire with a connector that mates to the one with the Purple, White, Gray and Green...

Have I mentioned I hate cars? I also hate motorcycles (I have two) I hate computers (i have 4 and build my own) and many other things?

Yes, you have to look for an amp, but no, the "B" connector on the back of the stereo (with the purple, grey, green and white wires) probably just remains unplugged.

Your "C" connector is sending line-level audio to the amp, and then the amp should be wired to the speakers directly.

Okay I guess I will look later. I have other stuff I need to get busy doing. So I assume I can just put this all back together as nothing can be solved here.

Right. But check your fuses before you put it back together, and if one of them is blown, it might be an easy fix. There might be an in-line fuse or fusible link or two in the bundle behind the stereo, and the rest of them are probably under the hood, just in front of the firewall.

The fuses under the hood are good. I already checked them. The stereo works, just no door speakers.

Right, but the stereo might be driven by one fuse, and the amp by another, so check any in-line fuses if you have them. I've never seen the Porsche amp, so I don't know if it has a fuse built right into it like the aftermarket ones I've seen.

Okay will do - I will look in the box and check them all.

OK, but not just in the box - look for fuses in the wiring too, e.g. plastic tubes that have a fuse inside them. I don't recall if Porsche uses them or not, but I know aftermarket stereos almost always do, especially on the power line. There's at least one fusey-looking box in your pictures above.

Oh, and don't forget to check on the battery - you might notice that the + terminal on your battery has quite a few extra little wires coming off it, and in-line fuses are often located up there, as they don't require peeling back any carpet.

He put a new battery in - got me to spring for a Porsche OEM battery and the only thing I remember being connected was a lead for a battery tender which we took off.

I'm surprised, mine has a lot of stuff coming off the + terminal.

If your hi-fi option setup is like mine (my car is a '94 also), you'll have an external amp under the passenger seat that will need to be bypassed if you want to use an aftermarket deck. That factory amp drives the front speakers only, so if you're not getting sound to the front, then that amp is probably dead, as mine was (I had the same problem when I got my car: no sound from the front speakers).

Each rear speaker - they are two-way separates, so there's your ten speakers - has its own onboard amp. Totally bizarre setup, I have no idea why Porsche decided to do it this way!

Again, your hi-fi setup may be different than mine, since you have a cab.

Cool Thanks Bomb...

That makes a few things a bit less muddy. I suppose the stock system is totally NLA.

There are places online to get the original stereos, some refurbished, some used.

there are 2 different hi-fi setups for the late hardtops. one is 8 speaker. one is 10. the other difference is an additional amp under the driver seat in earlier cars.

cabs had an additional alternate rear setup, which was a pair of boxed 2-way speakers. i have these in my car.

I only see one integrated speaker grill in the back....just holes drilled in the panel so that is probably what it is. Is it akin to the old 6 x 9 panasonics and their ilk?

I replaced everything in my system, except for the speaker wiring that goes from behind the deck to the doors - didn't want to try to fish new wires through the rubber thingy at the door hinge (what is that thing called anyway!). I have a five channel amp in the spare tire well powering everything. You don't want to stick with OEM. That stuff is merely adequate at best.

if it is stock, it will have behind it either a full range 4x6 or a box with a small woofer and a tiny tweeter.

@mbardeen, I think green, white, grey and purple are the factory colors for the speakers,... are they not?

They are not. Workshop manual shows White, Black, Red and Yellow (FL,FR, RL,RR) as the factory colors. This coincides what I found in my car.
