Add me to the list of odo/tripmeter failures. Any recommendations? Should I call Jeff at odometergears? Which do I get? Since my speedometer works I'm assuming/hoping it is the gear. Has anyone posted DIY instructions with pix?
Thanks!

I replaced both gears when mine stopped working last year. They are available on a number of sites, and the prices are somewhat variable. Since it's kind of a pain-in-the-butt job, I went with the more expensive gear because it was made from better plastic and "should" last longer. While I was in there I replaced the reflective surfaces on the dash with foil, replaced all the bulbs, and cleaned the nut contacts for all the gauges. After that little cleaning, my gas gauge went almost all the way to full and my other gauges became a great deal more responsive. Up to that point the most the gas gauge would read was 3/4 when the tank was full.
I went with the instrument bulbs recommended in another thread that were considered the highest wattage that you can use without melting the light tunnels. They are all available at the local parts store, so Porsche doesn't get your money this time.
Not a terrible job, but a bit time consuming and tedious. Honestly, the hardest part was getting the cluster out and removing the connectors. After that, the rest was pretty straightforward.

User clark's garage for the steering wheel, console and gauge removal. Look in the 'garage-shop manual' link. Under the ELECTRICAL section, there is a link to the 'Odometer repair'.
Use this video to see how the loosen the motor from the gauge. Our 968's mechanism is the same as the 993. The 968 gauge motor detaches nicely allowing the gears to be R&R's without any funny tools. Remove both parts and count the teeth and order accordingly. I ordered the big gear and small gear to be sure. I needed the 17 tooth gear.

Here are the parts:

I did this on the past weekend and now my car ages again.

I used surgical gloves to keep any finger prints off the gauge.
New and old Gears. (You can see the missing tooth on the small yellow gear)
Motor removed. The wires stay connected, but there is enough play to get in there.
Clean motor spindle and blow any possible leftovers out. Fit gears and re-assemble.

Williamos : Its still there. Navigate : Garage Shop Manual ( Left side bar), then look on the far right column labeled 'ELECTRICAL' in red. Under Gauges is the removal of the 85.5 gauges, and slightly lower down is the Odometer Repair.
