True odometer reading from Durametric?
#1

Previous owner told me the odometer was broken for a period of time, and I've always wondered how long and what the correct odometer reading should be. Today I read on the Durametric site that the diagnostic tool can read the true mileage. Anyone verify this is correct? If so then in principle no one should ever have to worry about an unknown mileage, just find someone with a durametric, possibly as part of a PPI for example. This would be another item on my list of reasons for me to get a durametric ...

If that's true, I'd think it's the ECU which must have been designed to register miles somehow. What else can keep a record other than the odo ?

I asked my local porsche mechanic about this today. He's pretty sure our 968 ECUs dont store this info, but starting with the boxster the ECU stores info on redlines, total hours running, mileage, and probably more.

Hmm, I suppose that data can useful for something or another, just as long as insurance companies can't get their hands on it because you know they'll use any excuse they can to jack up your premiums ..

The later ecu count redlines and rev limit uses so Porsche can duck out of engine warranty claims, they do over here anyway

Great, I wonder how long before cars also come with mandatory cameras in the cabin to monitor all your driving habits ..

news flash - insurance companies already have the "monitor" capability.  some of them will send you a plug in module that you drive around with for a period, and then send them, so they can rate how you drive, and adjust your pricing accordingly

Yes, but that's purely voluntary at this point . I was talking about a no choice set up where all cars and drivers MUST have these devices. Though I agree with a mandatory DUI device which prevents you from starting the car if you're drunk. But I'm drifting off topic ..
