Odometer/Tripometer Internal Gear Pics
#1

In response to the following from Brian:

"just a thought....

if anyone would have the patience...

that write up in Clark's Garage lacks photos of the disassembly of the speedo itself.

if someone would snap a few shots when they're doing the gear replacement, it might prove helpful for some of us dummies in the future.

funny how one good picture can say much more than 10 written steps."

I just did mine today, the hardest part is getting the instrument cluster out. The following 5 pics may take awhile to load, but should show where the replacement gear goes. The broken tooth is the amber spec to the right of the amber gear in the fourth photo.

put it in a DIY - if you can generate a pdf file, that would be best - if not, a word doc would be fine and i can convert it

Looks like this thread is lurking in a few different areas Flash. A consolidation of the pics with the gear supply info would be great.

The photo series is identical to my '92 speedo. I had removed the four screws under the circuit board, but didn't work too hard at prying the thing open because I assumed that the gears being offered fro the 944-style speedos would not work in this completely different mechanism.

Hey,

I happen to have this very problem on my '93 968.

Could somebody forward me the email address of the company supplying these little gears?

...Was quite a weekend..cruising through the Belgium Ardennens, close to Bastogne, when first the sunroof failed to lock down in place, so I had to reduce speed quite considerably and then the ODO meter stopped counting.. Ihave some work to do again!

Where should I start, when removing the instrument cluster? Do I have to remove the dash, or does the cluster come out from the front? Any important things not to do?

odo gear stripped this weekend - arghhh....

I recall that removing our steering wheel is a bit tricky and requires care not to trip the idiot light. I don't seem to find a DIY for this, however. Anyone recall where that may be?

Thanks

I could explain it, but this has nice photos. It is the same procedure for the 968 as it is for the 944. See section 68 of the manual here:

It's very simple, most of the time,

BTW, as you guys may already know, you can remove the instrument cluster without taking off the steering wheel (though it is a bit tricky).

I've done this repair on a 944, 951, and 968. To me, it was worth pulling the wheel to avoid possibly damaging the interior trim. It really doesn't take long to pull the wheel.

Thanks. I recall that the ! light can come on and stay on if you do this wrong.

Something about disconnecting the battery the day before?

Any issues with the steering wheel airbag? I sure would hate to set that thing off when disconnecting the wheel.

$300 beans for the shop to do this. As little time as I have these days that sounds like a bargain.

Wish you were closer, for $300 dollars I'd be glad to do it. It really isn't hard.

Anyone run the car with the instrument cluster removed?  I unhooked the battery before I pulled it and would like to avoid the idiot light coming on when reconnecting as well.

Thanks

not sure you can.  seems i remember that being a problem.  it will definitely trigger the airbag light if you turn the ignition key with the cluster removed.
