Identity of correct plug for instrument light dimmer
#1

Hi everyone,

I finally bit the bullet and had my AC replaced, it was well beyond my pay grade as a mechanic.  Expensive job, but there was no way out but through.  When I got the car back, there were two issues.  The first, was that the odometer kept resetting itself - resplendent with a loud clunk, like when you press the reset button hidden in the air vent.  The second is that I have no instrument lighting. I had the trip meter disconnected, but the resetting continued. Of course the mechanic is blaming the age of the car etc etc.  It seems too coincidental to me, as both things were working beforehand.

Anyhow, whilst I was under the dash yesterday, pulling out the dimmer to clean it (thinking that this might be one of the issues), a second two wire plug fell down.  It was identical to the plug that was connected to the dimmer.  I am now suspicious that the mechanic may have swapped the plugs, explaining my challenges.  One of the plugs is tagged with a 'T', and I found that this one was presently plugged into the dimmer.  Surely it would not be that 'T' means Trip?

Does my logic sound right, and has anyone had experience with this area of the dash?

Thanks in advance.

Peter

Another thread says that the two plugs are identical apart from the T marking, which indicates the trip recorder: the other goes into the dimmer -- but maybe you already discovered this by trial and error!

Best,

Congrats on getting the a/c up and running. Make sure you let the tech know asap about whats going on, even if its just a call.

Youll want to preserve the opportunity to have him correct the issues at your convenience the next time you visit vs. him saying I would of done it if you let me know, but now its too late game.

As far as letting them fix it - no thanks.

It took me over three hours to do an oil change on my 4Runner because the last idiot put the filter housing on with an impact gun.

I had to chisel it off.

I called them in the middle of it and told them. She was very apologetic and wanted me to let them have a chance to fix it...

They recently shut down their most recent shop, the one they bought 3 years ago, and only have their original one over an hour away.

She offered to make it right, but the would mean, I have to put new oil in the truck with the old filter, drive an hour, wait until they could get it in, then drive an hour back home.

No thanks. I am thinking of sending them the oil filter with a note that says "Put this in your trophy case."

There is no way, even if they were close, that they would touch any of my vehicles again. No more trust. She knew who I was and who did it because she looked up my number while we were talking and said that tech didn't make the transfer to the other shop. No surprise there. I told her that it was a good thing I don't have any social media accounts or it would be out there. The only thing I can do anymore is take my cash somewhere else.

As a 60+ year old cancer survivor with extreme vertigo every time I lay under something, I don't need to be doing this crap but until I can find another shop I am stuck.

I don't know why people can't do a decent job anymore. Safelight didn't hook up my washers the last time. They don't do my windshields anymore.

As soon as it's something I can't do, I am stuck in a big way.
