Looking for Brighter Reverse Light Bulbs
#1

When I back up (reverse) my MY94 968 up my driveway at night i can't see a thing - seems as if there are no reverse lights. A couple of nights ago asked my son to put the car into reverse gear while I was standing behind it. Two very faint lights came on towards the inside of the two clusters- so there is something in the rear light clusters that pretends to be reverse lights but as they are they don't illuminate anything.

I am looking for advice/suggestions as to what light bulbs to get to replace the two faint bulbs that are currently in there? Do any particular LEDs hold out promise?

Thank you in advance.

On an old MG that I used to run car rallies in I mounted a fog lamp with a toggle switch in the rear. This way if I had to back up on narrow roads I had in effect a head light on the rear.

Sorry... no advice for how to improve your visibility when backing up.

Just remember that reverse lights (or back up lights) are: "a light on the rear of a motor vehicle to warn others that the vehicle is being reversed. Also called reversing light."

I hear you Langley968 but I don't have the same problem with any of my other 4 cars and they are a relatively diverse group. They all have a section of non colored glass in their rear light clusters rather than the all red in the 968's case. When lit, the 968's reverse light reveals that the lens in front of the reverse light bulb is not uniformly red but rather striped red and uncolored. This feature makes the 968 all red clusters look better than the multi-coloured lenses on my other cars. Nevertheless my 968 reverse lights  do not emit nearly enough light in my opinion whether with which to see or be seen.

Thank you willamoss for sharing your solution but I am a stickler for "stock" and I am also not sure your solution will be considered street legal.

I believe the Japanese Spec tail light had a clear lens for back-up lights....it's been a while, maybe someone else can confirm.

Carry a flashlight with you?

The Japanese cars did indeed come with a clear lense in front of the reverse light. I have seen one in person. Someone imported a 968 from Japan and then had a accident and was parting it out.

Another reason to get a nav system with a backup camera. Cabs have almost no rearward visibility when there is glare on the back window.

Thanks very much for all the advice. I learnt about the superbrightleds.com website last night last night while searching through Pelicanparts. I like the way superbrightleds help a novice like me by asking for the vehicle details and the application before recommending the right LEDs. That is what i was looking for.

This site is great and you guys are a great help to a new 968 owner. Thanks.
