Rear 3rd brake light bulbs
#1

It was pointed out to me by friends on the 968 West Coast Tour that 6 of the 7 little bulbs in my upper brake lights on the rear trunk lid on my cab had burned out.  I ordered new bulbs online for about 3 bucks each but apparently the references I found and the PET I looked at had the wrong bulb numbers (999.651.030.90) and the bulbs I received were the wrong ones.  The ones I need have straight pins that plug into the sockets and the ones I received are folded over pins.  Looking on the rennlist forums and other places I determined that the bulbs needed were 941.631.911.20.  They are 12V 8W bulbs and on all of the Porsche parts sites they were about $12-$20. each.  This means that it would cost nearly $100 to replace the 7 bulbs.  There was a thread on one of the forums a few years ago that said you could find a replacement from True Value.  They are a G4 base (2 straight pins). I did some searching and found Halogen bulbs with G4 pins (CBconcept 10XG412V10W G4 JC Halogen Light Bulb) on Amazon.com that seem to be correct that you can buy for $6 for 10 but they are either 5W or 10W.  I ordered some 10W bulbs but hope they won't overload the wiring.  Does anyone know? Will let you know.

Steve

4 or 5. I can look at what I got from napa. I ended up doing an led strip after all (super looking)... but lost my cruise control in the process. Will post bulb #s for you when I locate them.

Steve, I looked at PET, the coupes list 7 bulbs but the cab only lists 1? Illustration 905-15.

For the cab:

1 lamp insert - 941 631 261 10

1 bulb - 941 631 911 20.

Either PET is wrong or maybe its a "bulb strip" that goes into the lamp insert??? That could explain the price from Porsche. Check with Pete over at Scottsdale Porsche and maybe they can clear it up.

I looked at my coupe brake light and can see 7 bulbs illuminated.  Drat, I was hoping one blown bulb caused my cruise control to fail.

This is for the 968/S2 cab.

In the past I got bi-pin halogens for low-voltage outdoor lighting and they worked fine.  More recently I have switched to LED bulbs, I bought wedge bulbs and unbent the folded over pins to make them fit the bi-pin socket:

I do not know if the halogen bi-pins are still around since the low voltage outdoor lighting scene has gone LED.  It's not easy to get LEDs that are bright enough unless you rewire the sockets but the ones I am using are about stock brightness.   However the LEDs have very very short warmup time, if you compare the LED to a cold halogen you will be surprised how slow the halogen is to come on.  If the halogen has been used recently it'll light much faster.

I have not had any issues with the cruise control.

Ok I received the halogen bulbs and did the install.  There were only 4 when I got it apart.  Apparently the PET is incorrect.  The new bulbs work fine and I am having no issues.  Beats spending $12-20 per bulb.
