ok - so my tripmeter AND odomoter are no longer functioning - no, it did not involve pushing the reset buton while moving - they just stopped working simultaneously

here's the question: will the replacement gear fix both, or is that just a tripmeter repair? before i rip it apart, i'd like to know if it can be done here, or if i need to send it out

Yeah--mine is acting up, and they are definitely related to each other. Speedo works fine, but my trip meter will hang up every 100 or so miles, and when reset it works again. The trip meter has got to be connected to the odo, as when one stops working the other does as well, and when the trip is reset and works, they both work.

Very interested if I can do this myself as I saw a metal gear somewhere [maybe 968engineering.com?] that replaces the crappy stock plastic one.

if anyone would have the patience...

that write up in clarks lacks photos of the disassembly of the speedo itself.

if someone would snap a few shots when they're doing the fix, it might prove helpful for some of us dummies in the future.

I fixed mine a while back, the gear is very easy to replace and will correct both the odometer and the trip odometer. However, the gear is not the only thing that can cause the problem. There is a small electronic backplane as well as a very small electric motor which drives the gear. Both are potential causes of the failure as well. Although the gear is the easiest and cheapest thing to try first.

If it is not the gear, you will likely have to ship it off to Palo Alto or Speedometer Plus to get it fixed, either spot will run you between $125 to $200 for the repair and shipping.

Also, for those do it yourselfers.....the 968 Speedometer guage is NOT the same as the 944Turbo or S2 (tyically quoted as interchangeable, however there are different mechanicals inside), so if you are looking for a replacement off eBay or elsewhere, check down to the part number.

I just repaired mine last mine night. It is NOT the same unit as those pictured on Clark's garage or in other articles. You don't have to remove the face plate or speedo needle. Just take off the motor on the side (2 screws) and you will see the bad 15 toothed-gear. Pop the new one in, and you're done. Very easy.

I just did mine today, the hardest part is getting the instrument cluster out. The following 5 pics may take awhile to load, but should show where the gear goes. The broken tooth is the amber spec to the right of the amber gear in the fourth photo.

My odometer appears to be working fine (I compared to Mapquest for distance to work), but my trip-odometer is going at about half the rate of the odometer. However, the trip-odometer doesn't appear to get hung up. Anyone seen this before? Do you think it's related to the the gear described in this thread?

I just finished replacing the gear. The original gear did not look damaged at all, and replacing it with a new one did not fix the problem. So my question is, is the odometer using the same signal as the speedometer? I believe it s, so it can't be a broken wire or bad connector somewhere. The speedometer works fine.

The odometer motor is a stepper motor with a small control board. Is that motor and board sold as a replacement part anywhere?

From time to time the odometer will work again, for maybe 1 mile or 5 miles and stop. But that is 5 miles out of 500 so it is of little use.

I am an electronic engineer, so I am comfortable debugging at the circuit board level.

Any clues or tips before I dive in would be helpful.

I've had my car for a year now and have always had intermittant odometer/trip meter issues. I can't prove this, but I think they are electrically connected to each other somehow but unrelated to the speedomoter just as you suspect. I haven't check the wiring schematics nor had opportunity to dismantle the instrument cluster to troubleshoot. My symptoms are much the same as yours where operation is hit or miss. I have noticed that the reset button sometimes works and sometimes doesn't too (also electronic, as the button push send some kind of signal to reset the numbers to 000). Other troubleshooting methods include a sharp thwack either on top of the dash or under the dash directly below the steering wheel and sometimes that charms it back into working. It also seems that more frequent driving will yield more consistent operation. I am all but convinced that this is electrical and there are a number of discussions about improved guage operation and the like after cleaning up ground points. I also have the wacky temp guage that will right itself after a finger flick on the plastic dash screen just on top of the temp guage. Bottom line is that I'm hoping cleaning grounds and checking solder joints will fix all these goofing dash/instrument problems. After replacing my stereo head unit, not only did my clock light start working (which had never before), but I could swear the dash lights got a little brighter. All roads lead to poor connections!
